(ah, I love a public forum... I hope the customer reads this)

The story goes like this... On Saturday Mike gets a call, a guy wants his '02 Jetta tinted... just the back window ...and (suprise!) it's already cleaned and everything, and he even took out the back deck already. :beer

Well, he wants it done TODAY. because he's going on a trip.

ok, bad news... Saturdays are by appointment only... and it's moot anyhow because we're 6 1/2 hours away at a family member's wedding.

So he wants to know if we can recommend anyone who can do it TODAY.

Well, um, it's the busy season, so I can give you a guy to call, but I seriously doubt he can do it TODAY. So we gave him the number.

Monday rolls around... guess who calls?

The guy who had to have it done today. Well, apparently he didn't go on his trip, or he's back already or I dunno what but he still needs this back window tinted... so how much is it?

So we tell him.

I think he crapped his pants.

"I think you'll find, sir, that we're in the range locally, if you're comparing apples to apples."

"Oh, no... no... You're WAY high."

I'm really not sure how the conversation ended...

I can just picture it: he bought the tint at autozone for... I dunno, cheap... How much is DIY tint anyhow? tried to do it himself and it kicked his butt. wanted someone to do it right away so he could tell people he did it himself. and now he expects a tinter to do his back window for $25 or something.

Come on, people, when you hire someone to paint your house, do you really expect it to cost just a touch more than what you paid for the can of paint?

the question people will never learn, I dont know what the deal is, people think window tinting is suppose to be "easy" and "cheap" so when we get these cheap bastards (mostly loudmouths) we have to find a "nice" way to explain to them how much it is and how exactly is not easy. but for some reason whatever you say, they always say its to much or nonsense people say, I dont tolerate people like that, people around here have been cheap in my area anyway, but its because of the local competition or start ups who come and go but do leave the cheap prices and then customers expect the rest of us to keep the prices real low, I think we need somekind of network where your'e only suppose to charge the lowest $500 that will keep the local flea market customers away. :beer

I found a solution for the guy that thinks it's easy ..this is what I do :DD

When his car comes in, and he pulls the line of :

"I used to tint, but don't have the time"

"I don't have the garage for it or I would have done it myself "

you get the idea..

I tell them they are more than welcome to tint a door while I start on the other side...and I'll knock the proper % off the price if they want to go ahead...but if they don't like what they did, they can just pay me for the material they used on the door.

That usually quiets them right up...only had 2 customers actually take me up on the offer..1 admitted it looked WAY easier than it was and stopped after paying me for 2 wrecked peices of film...the other kept what he did ...and came back a week later for me to remove his door he tinted and make it "look" like the rest of the job I had done :beer

(his I charged him full removal and retint price :D

All talk ...until you tell them t oput thier talk into action ..try it sometime the next time you get these kinds of customers..it's rather entertaining :DD

I used to tint, but I pretty much sucked at it, once I realized the work and skill involved to make it look good!!!!

....Leave it to the pros! Unfortunately, it is the "guy down the street" that "thinks" he can tint and starts to charge a nominal fee that sounds like is screwing some of you. Everybody thinks they can tint. A guy I know has had his car 1/2 done for 6 months and has even had to pull some of it off since then....and of course the tint is !llegal. :beer

I love em. just last weekend I was talking to a gal at a bar. quick rundown...she works there during happy hour, needless to say we talk alot. so im doing her.....CAR (you perverts) next week.

she was off duty and there with some dude. instantly, dropped everything when I walked in and started talking how excited she was about her upcoming tint job.

dude would not stop. now I already got a gal at home who keeps me happy, so I by no means was intending to play cock blocker. "oh yeah, any idiot can tint windows. I tinted a honda myself in less than an hour years ago." how many pieces on the back glass? " I did it in four" (like he was proud of it mind you) at this point I had to egg him on. got the whole story on his DIY technique. from his cutting technique (after pealing and already stuck to the glass, panel pulling, at least he didnt remove the glass so I guess hes on up on ya TINT) to his prep work, he took the car to the carwash earlier that day, they were already cleaned well.

whered you get the film. "oh well I dont remember it was so long ago" translation, im trying to get into this girls pants and dont want to know this big baller shops at wallmart.

but at least it didnt turn purple or bubble on him. he got rid of it bout a month later to aledgedly get a better, faster, already tinted one. (big baller, ya know, I go through cars like they are nothing)

so by this point my bros are in tears holding back. looked her straght it the eye. "better keep this one. he's a real handy one to have a round. but I really seriously doubt his skill usually goes much further than his hands."

she escorted him away

with a nice lil smirk on my face I leaned back in my chair and helped the bros with the pitcher. she joined us bout fifteen minutes later, after he was asked to leave if he wanted to start a scene.
