The professor is just as big of an idiot for actually grading a paper like that, and then to give the kid a D on it.

some teachers dont even bother reading papers anymore.

I had a professor in college that graded your entire paper based off the first page, and literally that's all he would read.

I tested him one time on a 5 page report. First 2 pages were my actual essay, last 3 I just started asking him how his day was and what my favorite things do to were. I got an A on that paper

I never had the balls to try it again though.
