I think I know the answer to this question but would like it to be clarified. Is there only certain types of tint that can be put on tempered vs no-tempered? What type are most residential dual pane windows? Thanks Jim :thumb

Not tempered is called annealed or float glass. When it breaks, it breaks in large pieces.

Tempered is heated and flash cooled to make it stronger. When it breaks, it explodes into millions of pieces like an auto door. It is a safety feature.

Tempered windows will have a hash mark in a corner indicating the glass is tempered. Federal law says all entry doors, and windows next to doors have to be tempered. You can also tell the difference when you tap it.

Most residential glass will be annealed. You will find tempered in exterior doors, windows next to the doors, bathrooms and any other area where broken glass will be a safety issue.

Annealed IG units have more restrictions of what type of film can be applied

There is also something called "Heat Strengthened Glass". It falls between anneald and tempered.

Get a hold of a "Film to Glass Recommendation Chart" it will help with all types of scenarios.
