Federal Tinting Regulations

What do the federal regulations say about what the auto manufacturers can do in terms of window tinting? Is there a minimum VLT for front side, rear side and rear windows? Is it different for cars vs. SUVs?

Also, are state regs generally getting more restrictive on VLT regulations?

Every state has a different law. Suvs and cars are usually different in every state.

from what I understand federal law is minimum VLT on F/Ds and windshield 70%. behind that is dependent on whether the vehicle is listed as a multi-purpose or passenger vehicle.

state regulations do nothing but get more restrictive when they change.

We lucked out here in WI in the early ninties, when they changed the state law from 0 tolerance on the front two windows, to 50%. The crappy part about that was, a car club sat down with lawmakers to make these changes (among others). I know a member of that club, and he said that they agreed on 35% all the way around. Well, when it actually got written into law, the lawmakers changed that to 50% for the fronts. Jerks.

I can't complain too much, cause 50% is better than none, but it would've been a lot nicer if they would've upheld that original decision of 35%.
