Hi fellas im having trouble shrinking the back glass tint on my focus estate after a few attempts the film just doesnt seem to want to shrink ive used the wet method as mentioned on tintdude.com do you think this could be because im using a DIY Film I,e solar? any advice would be gratefully recieved.

you might try mdogs soap method :lol6

So what your saying is that it should work with prity much any diy film? or is it worth me getting hold of sum llumar?

it should unless your model over there is totally different than our model

the focus over here barely requires any shrinking at all :lol6

mmm ... something is going wrong here I think, have you shrunk rear glasses before? try the soap method if you know it from this forum

take your time (obvious) and just keep plugging away

if ya cant get it with junk dyed film, theres no need to waste the money on a roll of good film just to keep messing up ... start with low end film and practice practice practice ... nobody gets it on the first try ... well, maybe some could on a fosuc ... :lol6

cheers for all the replies I was using the wet method I,e spraying the rear glass with soapywater mix and laying the rough cut fil on the outside putting in a horizontal anchor with my sqeegy then going to work with the heat gun on the fingers and smoothing them out I just didnt seem to shrink at all. Il just keep pluggin away at it and see what happens.

maybe the heat gun isn't hot enough?

the gun I use ranges from 60degrees to 600degrees. I use mine on the highest setting, then I adjust how close I get to it to get the perfect amount of heat.

      3M ceramic ir vs. LLumar Pinnacle

      Go with the shop you feel will give you the best installation/service. Both films are high-quality, and performance is on the same level. So either way, you can't lose. If you go with 3M CMIR 35%, have the shop confirm it will meter legal. Depending on the % of your stock glass, it could vary by 1-2%, which could be enough to meter too low. Personally, I love 3M CMIR as it is a great-looking film. Except for one, every vehicle in my family has it installed.

      3M ceramic ir vs. LLumar Pinnacle

      Hello! I am looking to get all of my windows tinted (minus the windshield) in my Mazda CX-5. I got a few quotes from some shops and need to decide which one to get. Shop 1: $419 ceramic ir Shop 2: $480 for LLumar F1 Pinnacle I would prefer the LLumar one, as it is 40% and not 35% like the ceramic ir due to me having to pass inspections in NC. I have also heard that LLumar tends to be better quality, but some people swear by 3M. I think it’s mainly preference, but correct me if I’m wrong. On paper the 3M looks better, but the shop that is selling LLumar says theirs is slightly better so I could be looking at the wrong numbers. They also sell the CTX for $420, but that’s worse than the 3M ceramic ir. Help me decide lol.

      XPEL WINDOW TINT shrinking

      It happens from time to time, usually when you don't have enough soap or there's a spot that's not quite dry and the film grabs the glass. It's super easy to crease when that happens, I usually just lift it and let it settle back down to reset and then continue on. Gotta be careful not to overshrink it too.

      IR Specs

      There are people way smarter than me but I'll sling a guess out there that what you are experiencing is the difference between IR and R factors. Window tint blocks(absorbs/reflects) UV and IR parts of the heat spectrum, BUT window tint does not have an " R factor " like the pink stuff in your attic. It takes mass to create an " R " factor. The shade is designed to reduce heat and also has the mass to create more of R factor in heat rejection and I am assuming that is the difference you are feeling.

      IR Specs

      Rear glass comes factory dyed. It has XR Plus 70% on it In looking at the IR specs... 92 vs 97% etc, not much of a differential of 5% Riddle me this Sitting in the backseat - I raised up the rear window shade. I did feel a difference in -less- heat with the window shade. The window shade is not solid but is semi perforated ? Is it due to an extra -layer- past the window. It wasn't on my radar as it does reduce the -feel of heat- from the sun shining on the window. Here I was thinking the IR 92% was a pretty decent spec in itself but the rear shade does add (less heat feel) for sure. I'm sure someone on TD has a better technical answer for my WIKI
