So about a month ago I decided to go from ft to pt in order to spend more time working for myself. I did all the things needed to keep a good relationship with my current employer including giving some notice before I went to pt. Well he flipped-out and turned off my company phone instantly and then sent someone over to where is was working and told that person (a nobody) to send me home(fire me) :skit . I was pissed but tried to stay cool with him as I have burned too many bridges growing up. I have even gone to his shop and worked for him when he has called to ask for help. Then today one of the tinters from his shop called me to tell me that my name came up today and the owner said they should stay away from me and not associate with me :lol2 I could not believe what I was hearing, I have treated this guy with respect and gone above and beyond for his company, as well as putting up with his crap :heh. So whatever all I know is I have been very fortunate since my departure from that place, I have a couple of great accounts and I am able to spend more time with my girls and my skateboard. So after writing this I guess I havent really lost anything but a 54hr wk headache. Thanks for the therapy session TD :skit

Been there done that. My guess is they feel threatened and you'll take $$$ from them.

I can kindof understand their POV, but they don't have to be pricks about it. I shudder to think what my x-boss says about me, but I just try not to cross paths with him and thus far, I haven't really even tried to get customers in his area. I know I have taken a couple customers from him, but if he knew the volume of business I get yearly compared to him, it wouldn't even make a dent in his income.

And on the flip side, I never say anything negitive about him to customers who may mention his company. I don't say much positive, other then that I used to work there, etc.

There is plenty of business for everyone. :lol2

HE'S NOT WORTH IT! SOON ENOUGH HIS OTHER EMPLOYEES WILL SEE HIM FOR WHAT HE IS AND LEAVE TO. THEN HE WILL HAVE TO HIRE NEWBIES OR DO THE WORK HIMSELF!!! MWAHAHAHAHAH :nope

I think you have done the right thing .I to did exactly that and have never looked back and I can also spend more time with my daughter and family business when it need done .And they still keep calling after 8 yrs to see if I need a job .Sometimes ill stop buy there just to see whoes left and theres only one guy I know .So good luck work hard youll be fine

no employer wants employees working for multiple places unless that was the understanding from the beginning. I know that if someone came to me and said they wanted to cut back so they could tint more out of their home I would let them go too...situations like that just don't work out.

its called a conflict of interests. grounds for termination in most work places

      This kind of customer can be found the world over. Often, we can sense trouble before it even really starts. I mean, how many times have you had an enquiry asking how much it costs to tint a small car? This kind of question sets alarm bells ringing as I realize this isn't just a run of the mill Camry that they own, but more likely something much more sinister: usually an Audi, a BMW or you guessed it, a Volvo, and not just any old Volvo, an XC60! (Substitute any other Euro-trash that you wish - I'm sure you get the point) I immediately ask if they know what type of car they have. Silence often follows for a few seconds until they realize they've been sprung. "Yes" they admit. "Why wouldn't I know?" I then explain that in order for me to quote the job, I need to know what I'm dealing with, and that I'd hate to over price them with a figure that's usually reserved for European cars, which are more difficult to tint than the average home-grown varieties. "I have an A6 Audi" they confess, and I realize my spidey senses are still working, despite my grey hair and bulging beer belly. "Oh well then" I say "That's good to know. I'll make sure that it isn't just one of the juniors that works on your vehicle. The cost is $550" (Did I mention that I work alone?) At this point, they either want to book the job in or decide to call around for other prices. I'm happy either way, not just because I did or didn't get a job worth doing, but because I hadn't been tricked into booking "one of those jobs" for next to nothing.

      Would you please suggest an IR/Solar REFLECTIVE tint for my Mitsubishi Outlander panoramic roof?

      I'm considering tinting the entire vehicle, but I've got to do something about the panoramic roof. It acts like a radiator in direct sun. I've searched the forums here, as well as other sites, but have yet to find (understand?) the best tint/film options for my panoramic roof. The Outlander roof is tinted, but allows a great deal of solar heat. The cover is merely a single layer of thin, opaque, dark (on both top and bottom, dumb) fabric that does very little. I don't want to install anything that merely absorbs solar energy and radiates heat. I'm seeking a solution that actually reflects IR, UV, and possibly even some visible light, if that's possible. My understanding is that both dyed and ceramic tints absorb IR, and that 3M Crystalline may reflect most IR between 900-1000nm, but that seems more like crafty marketing than anything as most IR energy is between 700-900nm. I've read that V-Kool reflects IR, but I haven't seen that it's available in the US. Also, I lack the skill to DIY this, so I'd like to use something that's readily available to skilled US installers (PA/NJ/DE area, preferably). If I can't find a tint that actually reflects solar energy, I've considered covering the roof with perf window wrap (white outside / black inside). The look wouldn't be ideal, but it would probably work. Thanks in advance!

      How to shrink film on windshield?

      Put the heatgun down and step away from the vehicle. You are going to crack a windshield and then be like most tinters and won’t ever tint a front windshield again. My advice for front windshield dont do them until you are very good at the rest of the car. The front windshield is a laminated glass that has many weak points from rock chips etc. Care is needed during the shrinking process. Also it is the only window on the vehicle that gets eye banged everyday. I can see that you are shrinking sideways and that tells me exactly your level of experience. There’s a reason tinters charge the most for a front windshield as compared to all the other windows.

      Back in my install days in Florida I had a client stop payment of their check. When the bank informed me I put together a letter to the client stating that I would have him served and see him in court. I went on to say I would likely prevail because he never came back to complain and the fact that Florida has a law dating back to, I think, 1914 that covers defrauding an innkeeper, which his actions would be treated in a similar manner. He caved and brought in the money for the job but I would not accept it until it included the fee for having him served. Few folks try anything to get a freebie. Another regular accused my employee of scratching the hood of his car. Funny thing was I tinted the car, not the employee and I knew I didn't scratch the car. He wanted me to give him a free job in exchange. I said, NO! He left in a huff and before his wife left she said she saw a cat clawing at the windshield mister that morning. When I left the manufacturing side of my career, I was asked if I would be starting a tint biz. 😂🤣 Oh HELL NO!

      Yup that was one of the reasons I settled. I knew it was just going to get chargeback. These card companies favor the customers and will make us fight to get what is ours. I’m busy as it is and don’t need the headache.

      I cannot recall the number of times I've taken on this position with a customer. I call it the taillight refund. Like TD said, people suck; for the most part they are entitled, petulant children.
