Dot Matrix

My last tint job was absolute poo, so I'm having the guy who installed my clear bra redo my tint as well. I talked to him today, and he said that he's going to leave it in the sun until Monday and then he's going to fix the dot matrix. I'm assuming that he's going to push it down or something. He said that it already looks 10 times better than it did, which makes me happy. My question is...Why in the world does the dot matrix exist? Does it do something for the car? Other than causing window tinters problems, I know no other uses. :eyebrows

My understanding for the purpose of matrix on some styles of cars is that when the sun is at it's peak UV time ( 12-2pm) , it helps disperse the suns rays from going directly on the heads of passengers that are riding in the back seat.

Personally , I think if this true, they should all follow suit and just use black lines like on Grand Prix, etc ..serves the same purpose yet will look better once tinted which in turn makes the look of the car they manufacture look better :beer

I can't prove it, but I believe that there is a dept in every mfgrs R&D division, whose sole reason for existance is to mess with the after market businesses. :lol2 Prime example... The Cutlass Supreme, or the CR-V. They designed the rear glasses on them, then sat back cackling maniacly, and said "Lets see 'em tint THAT one!!! :beer:wall

I asked someone in the business and this is what I got.

It's silk screened onto the glass. Silk screens wear out. A straight line wears out much quicker than a dot pattern around the glass. So dots allow the same screen to be used much longer.

As far as the big patch at the top....I'm guessing to protect people's heads.

FYI, the person I asked works at the company that makes the screens for Viracon here in town.

Here is what I think. The automotive glasses (windshield and the back glass) are GLUED to the vehicle with polyurethane adhesive. The black area on the glass blocks the UV ray from the sun and therefore makes the adhesive last longer. The dots maybe cosmetic in nature as it creates a smooth transition from the black line to the clear glass. Don't quote me on this, I might be wrong.
