Tinting Plastic convertible rear window

I have a 69 vette and we are redoing the top with a cloth top vs. vinyl. I wanted to order a pre-tinted plastic rear window but everybody I talk with say they are no good and will not hold up. So is there a way to tint the rear plastic window? There is definitely a fold over mid-way on the window when the top is down. The car is a resto-mod and it will drive me nuts not having the back window tinted like the side windows. The car is a 3~4 day per week daily driver as I put 8~10K miles on it per year so yes it does and will continu to get lots of usage so I need something reliable....not just for a couple shows.

Cheers...Rob

Tinting plastic is a no no. Window film goes bad very quickly when put on plastic. Plastic outgasses and will cause bubbles to form, also plastic expands and contracts MUCH more than glass.

trust me, dont do it. you will ruin your top. I have seen this done on jeeps with the plastic windows and its not pretty.

:spit:beer I have had guys w/jeeps go ahead anyways at the local hack shops, then come back to me to see if I can remove it after they have tried to get the film off themselves. It is not a pretty site.

Seems like I had seen a few tinted acrylic rear windows at the last show I went to, but could never find the owners to ask where they got the glass from. :beer

I tinted some plexiglass in a log truck last week, you guys think it will hold up on p. glass? And back to original question I wouldn't tint the plastic window.

Your saying you just tinted one last week ..but then turning around saying you wouldn't recommend it :beer

I'm confused :drool

Wow!! Another vette dude (I am on the vette forum C3 under "carpedm"). Here are some pics & details of my car...

L46 350/350HP

PS, PB, PW, & Now Working AC thanks to Vintage Air

Richmond 6 Speed Conversion (absolutely love this modification from the old 4 speed)

C5 Seats

Vintage AC system complete retro-fit to all look stock but preform just like todays system using R134a, etc

SharkBar & 5 point seat belts

Complete New VB&P Street & Salom setup

C5 Electric motor pop-up head lamps vs. vaccum style

Power Door Locks

Viper 7000? Pager alarm system, etc.

The only real big ticket item left in the resto-mod process is the engine which I am leaving to last (doing it July 2007) since this will cost serious bucks and I wanted to get everything else in good order before I drop in a LSx series engine going all newer hi-tech stuff vs. the carb. Current engine is good and strong, but original and I don't want to risk blowing it up and besides...nothing wrong with having a net SAE 450+HP fuel injected ponies riding under the hood. Back in 69 the HP ratings were gross and my engine was rebuilt a little while ago with lesser compression ratio to run on pump gas easily.

I am having Al Knoch (corvette interior specialist) put a "clothe" top vs. the current vinyl top. I asked them about putting in tinted rear window and they said the stuff that is dyed-tinted already just does not hold up as well as the clear stuff. I don't know exactly what the reason is behind that, but he said he is going to ask around to see if there was any better stuff out there as he (Dale) said something about the pre-tinted stuff being very thin.

See ya guys around and thanks for the tips on the window tint. Now it looks like I am either SOL or risk using some other pre-tinted stuff that does not hold up well.

Cheers...Rob
