I got a call yesterday for an estimate here in Southern Illinois. Job worked out to 454 square feet....not huge but nice size just the same. So I gave the guy a call and gave him my price of $6.50 per square and told him I could do it for $6.00 if he wanted to do it all at once...

He then tells me that he has other prices and one of them was at $3.00 per square foot and the other was about $5.00....

My question is who would really do a job for that little when the market here supports my prices more than not????

You can always use a situation like that as a tool instead of a defeat. You can start from the angle of "do you really want the lowest bidder on this job?". Let him/her know why it's a better idea to go with you. Don't focus on price during the sale, focus on quality. Your competitor probably didn't do that.

If the only thing to compare a customer has is price, then you are lost. You have to give them the quality angle.

And I'm not talking about film quality necessarily.

Exactly, my belief is that when you go out on a sales call, you are selling yourself, not the film. They want the film, which is why you are there. They want someone there who is going to do a great job and honor their warranty. I am passionate about what I do and the customers always pick up on that, if they have one of my competitors come in and give them a lower price, they will call me on my cell phone almost immediatley. They will give me the price and ask if I can match it, and sometimes I can. Most of the time, however I simply tell them that I cannot match my competitors quote for various reasons and I apologize for that, however I promise them that I will do the very best I can for them. Like I said, you're selling everything but the film, most of the time.
