ok so in my years of tinting I know its only 3 and a half but over 1000 cars I have never felted any cars and ive tinted every car on that list of cars to felt especially tons of the new mustangs and not once have I had a gasket scratch the tint or even had a customer come back sayin their tint got scratched... have yall actually had a problem with the gaskets scratching or do yall see their plastic and just assume a potential problem?

95% of all roll ups.. that are peeling from the bottom, are direct results of inner belts wearing the film edge. the other 5% from bad prep related to non access to lower glass..... Auto trim removal such as panels/rear decks is a specialist field which I little patience for. So I keep two on hand....Always ask to see the installers own car/work, this will tell you what to expect :evilgrin

Just last week I saw an 05 accord that the driver's side tint was nearly ruined from scratches. The rest had started, but the driver's window obviously gets more use.

Luckily tintman came and felted it for me since I was in his neighborhood.

I bet your customers are just so mad that the tint got scratched up that they never come back.

If I recall correctly, someone posted a picture of what a Mustang looks like after 2 weeks.

very nice dan, but you forgot about the door panel removal, yes or no

it's personal preference for the tinter. it's not often* /necessary/ but it does make the job easier for the tinter. the tinter that pulls panels does it on a day-to-day basis, far more often than the kid at the car dealership who usually changes your oil and made it rattle last time he replaced your window regulator.

cars are like legos... the door panels are designed to come off. there's nothing wrong with taking them off if you know what you're doing.

if it's a reputable shop, and they do damage your car, they will correct the problem to your satisfaction. you should make your decision based on whether the shop is reputable, not whether they pull the panels.

*there are certain cars that need felt added to the rubber sweeps (where the window goes inside the door). On these cars, yes, the door panel needs to be removed.

:thumb:eyebrows Which is why in my earlier post, I questioned someone about their statement that if you have to remove panels, you are not a professional

wow interesting... so what do you do buy a roll of felt (which I have seen before but wondered why anyone would buy it) and put it on the insde of the gasket and roll it over the top of the sharp side or just put it on the inside?

As was stated, it's personal preference. Most of us will limit the liability of the shop, and pull panels only when absolutely necessary. And if they DO, they know what they are doing. Nobody wants to be accused of breaking something that they aren't responsible for.

I'm with Matthew on this one. In well over 30 years, I have NEVER felted a door on a car, and I have NEVER seen damage occur that felt would correct. I can only speak for myself, but I, also, have done more than a few of all the cars on the "felt list" and not had problems. As for the customers with problems not coming back, :thumb:evileye , I WISH!! I seem to be getting more than my fair share of utterly "NIT PICKERS", trust me, if there was a problem with scratching, in 30 plus years, I'd have known about it.

I HAVE seen cars with overly long windows, (Camaros, Firebirds) that have the "metal window guide" down inside the door scratch, but they are scratching the GLASS, and no amount of felt on the door sweeps is gonna cure that.

If a door sweep is so tight that it's scratching, is the answer to put MORE material in there and make it even tighter? And the felt is held there by an adhesive strip. Do you not think that adhesive is gonna fail eventually and muck up the film as it gets rolled up and down?

Of course, I don't see the amount of "film failure" that I see described here on TD either. Maybe I'm living right? :lol2
