can you put film on the outside of laminated glass?

I know it's a bad idea to put interior film on laminated glass (from the inside).

what about putting outside film on the outside of laminated glass? is that safe?

I would say no, since the lamination in usually polyvinyl buterol, and when excessive heat hits it, is can turn to mush. This reduces the chance of breakage(even though that issue still exists), but will ruin the lamination.

You can use some films on the interior and yes exterior metalized films are just fine for laminated glass. Get yourself a film to glass chart from your manufacturer before you go any further

It is also helpful to know if the glass is dual pane or single pane.... If it is dual pane which pane is laminated? Is the glass tinted? Many variables.
