tinting over factory "solartint"

hello,

I have a 98 ford contour here, it has "solartint" glass (at night or late evening or sometimes during the day with the window half down you can see a slight tint) I read somewhere a guy got 50% on his contour, a cali hwy patrol metered his window, and it read 43%. I am thereby assuming it has a 93% vlt at factory if my math is correct (which it should be but im not exactly sure).

in Illinois, I have been told that the law is max 35%, with a 5% variance for stock tinting and various brands. so if I slap 35% up there, I would drop to 28% (again if my math were right) but if I put 40% over it, I would drop to 33%, which fits right in there with the 35% +/- 5% rule.

but does it actually look 33% with 40% because of the stock tint? logic would tell me yes, because the tint is all based on light transmission so it would be stopping the same amount of light. I just want to be sure before I spend the money on a roll of tint.

I know, it's not my first car I have tinted, I did a buick century before this (god was that back window a royal pain) and it turned out really well. I am in Algonquin IL.
