defrost lines and steel wool

Recommended Posts

I recently asked how to deal with large defrost lines on Dodge Challengers. Seems like the popular answer for dealing with this is 0000 steel wool. My only question is, how safe is this? I've worked for a Chrysler dealership for awhile now and have learned just how sensitive a lot of Chrysler glass is to scratching. I was going to say fu** it and keep dealing with a few peanuts here and there, but the new 300 has the same defrost lines. Chrysler is starting to piss me off with this sh**. Anyways, has anyone ever left swirl marks or scratches on chrysler back glass while using steel wool, or is it pretty safe? How hard should I scrub the lines? Are we talking just a couple of swipes or scrubbing the piss out of it until covered in sweat? Thanks.

how are you shrinking your Film for the BG.

Wet or Dry?

I had alot of trouble's with this wet shrinking film. So I switched back to dry shrinking and problem solved.

Also don't worry about #### steel wool. It should be totally safe to use. :twocents

Dry shrink. I only had to try wet shrinking it once and never did it again.

huh what kind of film are you using?

That may be some cause of your problem's then.

I service a few dodge dealerships and nissan's as well both are giving some installers problem's with peanut's.

Also it may be that you have to much slip in you tank. :beer or I have heard some guys having trouble that were using dish soap instead of baby shampoo as well.

Llumar Atc. Yeah, it doesn't stick very well. Large dot matrix is a nightmare with this stuff.

Llumar and dotts don't get along very well. I used ATR film for many years. Alot of guys on here seem to like the CTX line better.

I switch to suntek back when they came out. And liked working with their film until it started going downhill a few years back. My local comp has given Llumar a bad name in my area because he keeps all Llumar poster's and banner's, but he was really using sungard during the bad years, so he pretty much screwed that brand up around where I live. I have gone back to the first film I started tinting on which is JWF. I use about everything on the market from time to time, but for auto I mostly use JWF's marathon line. Couldn't be happier with the price and proformance :beer

So if I have to use the steel wool on defrost lines, how much should I scrub them? What technique do you use?

A little heat usually solves that.

I found that heating LULU from the outside would make it stick to the dotts better while if you tried heating the film from the inside it made the film want to fall off even more. My best results with getting the dotts to lay down was to hard card all the water out that I could using a felt hard or hard card wrapped in a paper towel. If that didn't make the custy happy. Have them bring it back in a couple day's and go over the dotted area again. This would normally do the trick even for the pickiest custy's. :thumb

Welcome to the board. The 0000 steel wool will never cause you a problem. you can scrub with it just anyway you want. You will see the lines coming clean and the shine will be noticeable with all the oxidation gone. I have used it for over 33 years with no problem but don't try using anything like 000 :lol2
