UV - overhang enough to keep out?

Recommended Posts

Family room.... windows are facing north... they don't have direct sunlight coming thru them. Brazilian cherry wood flooring... first floor. The 2nd floor has a large deck... so there is an overhang of about 15 feet from the windows.

How much UV would still be coming in?

Are there meters that would detect the UV enough though there isn't any direct sunlight?

Thanks!!

Wow, a year old and no reply?

Uv will come in North facing windows, with overhang or without, because it reflects off outdoor surfaces. It won't meter as high as say the facing the sun is hitting at the time you test, but it is still damaging to any materials inside the dwelling. Also, from about Ft Lauderdale/Naples Florida south you have sun penetrating North windows around June-July each year.

LLumar once carried some cards that looked like a house and were used in conjunction with whatever film sample you wanted to cover the window with and some UV sensitive paper. They were great for leaving behind for the consumer to check a few days later to see the effects of UV penetrating North facing windows.

I do not know if they still supply them (as a marketing tool), but, you could always make simple cards with two openings and buy the UV sensitive paper to demonstrate with. Cover one opening with film and then lay a strip of UV sensitive paper across both openings.

Wow... blast from the past. :)

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm trying to remember if they did those windows or not... I *think* I did them.... but they changed what they wanted a few times and I'm not 100% sure.

Hey Smart,

Right on as usual.

Based upon the number of calls I get here at EWF with that exact question, it is not well understood. In that regard, thanks for dusting this up and setting it straight !!
