asking for better pay

So I've been working for a busy window tint/detailing/used car business for about 7 months. I didn't know how to tint when I first started, but I did know how to detail and very quickly, as well as wrench on vehicles if need be. So for the first couple months I basically just detailed and ran errands, and cleaned the shop. Then I began training for window tint. I've been tinting. now for almost 4 months. Only in the last month have I been tinting on my own start to finish. I spend typically under two hours on a full four door tint, that's cleaned and out the door. I've been meaning to ask for more pay, but not sure how much. Currently I'm making under 10 an hour, which I can't really get by on. What would be a fair pay to ask for, and should it be hourly or commission? I am a busy worker and never waste time. I know my boss trained me but feel he's taking advantage of me. Thoughts?

How do they treat you overall? A good employer who treats you well wouldn't have a problem increasing your pay if you are bringing more value to their business.

If you discuss it with him fair and reasonably, expect him to respond the same way. If he doesn't, and acts like a jerk, then maybe it's time to fire your boss and look for a new one.

Of course this only applies if your efforts GENUINELY add to the businesses bottom line.

they treat me good overall. but I feel I add to their profits. we have two Bays and I take one, my boss the other not only did I prep and cut out the two.cars he was working on, I tinted there myself in the other bay. granted there isn't slot but considering I prep his cars, I'd say its good.

Careful for what you ask for...If you ask for commission you wont be making crap when it slows down and will be standing around doing nothing, for nothing! I would maybe try asking for a salary with commission. It will give you that little extra drive to sell and do more work knowing that you can make a few extra bucks on the work performed. Just my  :twocents

you have less than a year of experience.

There are still a lot of nonsense that you are not exposed to.

 

It is really hard to convince your boss or another boss that you are a master tinter within such short timeframe.

Hang on, and decide your next move a year later.
