The BMW, Mercedes and other high-end manufacturers new Matte paints look very nice with a smooth finish.  Matte reflects much light less than the traditional gloss and this gives the car a nice soft glow rather than harsh reflections (not necessarily a bad thing).  It's a very different look but it also requires a very different approach to how we maintain car paint.  I don't think matte is necessarily more difficult to maintain but it does require a new or at least different set skill set and a lot of what we've learned over the years don't apply to matte or can even damage it.
