how dark is safe  for the window ?  

have used 20% no problem.

will  have some darker film next time

Too many unknown variables to give a simple answer.

 

If you are using automotive film, that's a bad idea. Many automotive films have high solar absorption rates and they are usually not published. You should look into a residential film that has absorption rates from low 50% downward.
