Cheap Film Handler...

I got tired of cutting on the floor and too cheap to buy a film Handler....well actually will be buying one in the next two weeks, but this will do for now.

Basically buy a piece of weldable steel (48" or 60" or 72") at home depot, drill two holes in it about 9 inches apart.

Place the steel at the bottom of a film box and use like a giant washer/support.

Insert a bolt into each hole pushing through the bottom of the box and into the ladder shelf which should already have a couple of holes in it as well.

Place a washer and wing nut on each bolt end and hand tighten.

Thats about it....You can put measure marks down the ladder or put one of those box star cutters on the box to slit the different lengths. I will be only using it to make width cuts. Also just drill some holes into the side of the ladder and bolt on the steel piece so you can store it when not in use. BTW, the box looks bowed because it was an empty box with a short roll of 30 inch film...

I am sure someone else has done this before but I was too lazy to look.

I had a wooden stepladder that I had marked for auto film when I first started......didn't use anything but gravity to hold the box though.....only 40" rolls on there also.

May as well pull from the floor with a tape measure laying on the ground. I can't see how this can provide more accurate or straight edge cuts than that method.

Can't afford a filmhandler? Buy a box star. It's worth the $80.

Like I said Dan. I will be using this just to do width cuts not vertical. The reason, not enough room on the floor in some places. Yes I can afford a film handler and will be buying one in a couple weeks, just thought this would help someone who cant. Thanks for the input though.

not a bad idea for something simple. I like cutting film when it hangs from the box(or w/ me a filmhandler). it lets you stand instead of bending over. you're gonna love the filmhandler when it arrives!

Flatglass is made so much easier when you have a handler, I absolutely hate cutting out of the box.

Yes, one of the best tools ever.

Before that I would use a step ladder or pull from the floor. Sometimes boxstar. But when I use a ladder I just set the box up there. I didn't need to attach extra steel to it.

Oh! Is the metal strip attached to the ladder a cut channel?
