They seem to be engineered for quick assembly at the cost of being serviceable. Plus the whole planned obsolescence thing.

As soon as I read Ford F350, I knew it was the rear view mirror. We broke one a few years ago. Even with the removal tool, it is a PITA. Now we do not remove any Ford rear view mirrors. Just slit the film to go around the base and seem them together on top.

100% normal.  100% correct.  Automotive glass is not as “clear” as you think it is.  Most windshields will meter around 72% to 74% and if you add a 70% film to that, it will meter around 52%. +/-

I would stay away from XPEL simply because they're full of themselves.  I've been a SolarGard dealer since 2008 and rarely have issues with the film.  Call Sunbelt Distribution in Houston, ask for Kenny.  They have a few brands including SolarGard but other more basic brands as well.

Well that makes me feel a lot better about my self lol i spent nine hours on a full install for a Pacifica mini van today. Everything was going smooth until I got to the back window. Didn’t shrink it enough the first time and ended up creasing. 2nd attempt came out much better. Back windows still scare me and I’m struggling with quarter windows. I either leave too much excess film or have gaps. It’s frustrating but I enjoy the struggle once the struggle is over with lol I’m just going to keep on working. Surely I’ll get good at it eventually. You pros make it look so dang easy.

Hi there guys, first post here.  And I don't wanna come across as a Karen but well......... lol

I have a car from the 1980's and have the glass out of the car.  I have called some tint shops and they are insistent on knowing what type of vehicle it is.  I just say "well I'm just bringing the glass separately so make doesn't apply".  The reason I try to dodge around it is past experience with dishonest businesses.  Kind of 2023 people in general, sadly.  Anyways, what I'm getting at is I am trying to see who's going to just dig and dig for that information.  I just can't help think that they're trying to price it based on what type of car I have.  If I say I have a Bentley versus an 80's Civic, I can see them thinking $$$$ on one car and $ on the other, if you know what I mean.  And no it's not a Bentley or a Civic, heh.

So for the 'honest' pros out there, what is the importance of knowing my vehicle so badly?  Keeping it from them I sound like a weirdo because well most people would just ramble their make/model off, and what I am doing is well, weird but I'm tired of getting ripped off.

    Any inputs?  Much appreciated.

Also, is ceramic that much better if I'm keeping the car long term?

The logic is that you have no idea what is easy and what is difficult when it comes to tinting...if you did, none of us would be having this ridiculous conversation.

Just curious...what vehicle EXACTLY are you wanting tinted???  Or is it still a secret???

Mustang glass is flatter, 944 is severely curved which requires more skill and patience to shape it to the glass resulting in a lot more work and time. Majority of shops would not be able to install it on that glass. The glass being in the vehicle or out of the vehicle does not matter besides it bring harder to install on any glass out of the vehicle. It is like you calling a cleaning service to get a quote for your home but don't want to tell them sqft and how many stories. It doesn't make any sense.

If the part is even available....

Laying film when it's out of the car increases the difficulty by a factor of 5. Also increases the opportunity to damage it as well.

I've got a dollar that says he scratches the film before he gets it reinstalled...

Nobody really wants to work on old restorations. Half the time they are glued together without the right clips and the fabric/vinyl/leather is brittle with a fresh coat of dye that starts running as soon as it gets wet. Don't even get me started about the cardboard panel backers...

Sometimes you have to pay the cost to be the boss. This is one of those times.

Without sarcasm, yes the ceramic film is worth every penny.

I wouldn't even consider agreeing to tint ANY glass out of any vehicle without knowing what I'm up against.  The 80s have many, many not so nice vehicles to work on...even with the glass removed (it can actually make it more difficult in some cases).  No different, for example, if I was selling a vehicle but wouldn't list make, model, year and just say it has 4 doors and 4 tires...a vehicle is a vehicle, right?  I think you are being a little too paranoid thinking someone is going to rip you off lol.  Good luck.

We use Eastmans new Core software which is pretty great.   Granted it is pretty new software, it is better and better with every update.  We use to use their Precision Cut software which was really bad but pretty good patterns.  They have revamped the way their patterns are made with tint and with PPF.  I feel within the next year they will be at the top of their game with the patterns and software they are putting out.  They are putting lots of R&D into their software and into the pattern development.

The pictures show some pretty big gaps. I use a plotter program called Computer Cut and the model 3 patterns don’t leave gaps but all cut programs are different. Ask your tinter to hand cut the doors and be careful with the back window as removing the film can cause the defrost lines to come off. Since this is the job you got ask if they will cover the rest of the rear window with a second piece. Won’t look as good as the whole thing in one piece but least you won’t run the risk of losing the defroster. I’ve seen lots of those windows tinted up to the top where Tesla has the factory shade but that job doesn’t go that far. If you leave it like it is it will probably not make a difference in the glass breaking but those windows break easy without any film on um ✊

The circled areas are raised film sections that need to be pushed back down. The DOT Matrix (black dots) are sitting on top of the glass pushing the film up and creating air pockets. It will never be perfect, but a credit card wrapped in a microfiber towel might do the job. Just don't push too hard to create an indention in the film.

Most of our customers go with 50% on the windshield to add a slight shade. If you want to add shade, switching to 50% might be worth it. I would ride more in your wife's car, especially at night, to see if you want that. I wouldn't waste money swapping to 70% since it would not be noticeable.

If you have any issues seeing at night with the 70, i would not recommend going lower. If no issues, you will most likely be fine with 50. I run 40 on mine and have zero issues with visibility. Here is a couple of videos I did on a previous vehicle. I don't have any night videos.
