  1. Just adding my experience to the list that strange things were afoot as I stripped the rear on one of these. I think mine was an 07 or 08, either way it was the thin lines and tweeters on the panels.

It appeared that some copper was on the film, but I tested the defroster after completion by technical means of laying my hand on the glass ( :lol ) it seemed like everything still worked. Either way-warn the customer ahead of time/ have them sign a waiver if you don't know them! :trustme

  2. will a 20 inch roll cover the back glass? i told a freind id do hers when i go down to so cal next month to visit the inlaws. 350 mile tintjob

If I'm driving 350 miles, I'm taking everything in my shop just to be safe! :lol
  3. x2 on the tape seals, pull sweeps, and singe rear deck. I also pull the brake light- 2 screws. Maybe one last tip in my opinion, tack your center line about one grid up from the tabs. Did an 02 yesterday, first one in awhile, and the top half took more work than the bottom. These cars take a little bit of time to get them clean but they look harder than they are.

I'd rather do these than Tauruses of the same generation :thumb

  4. Don't use llumar tint. They are having major manufacturing issues - tint layers separating and coming scratched off the roll.

I was a dealer until I switched to 3M a few months ago. Never going back.

Plus, now I don't have to deal with jack anymore...worth switching based on that alone.

I think no matter what brand you use, at some point there will be a short period of bad runs. I've seen it with every brand I've ever used. (Johnson, Llumar, Suntek.) But in the 18 years I've been doing this, Llumar has been the longest lasting and best film in general. I'm sure 3M is also a great film, but surely they've had short term flaws as well.

  5. Received a sample of HP 18 today. At first I thought it was Renegade 20 but a close side by side inspection revealed a very slight color difference. There were some comments on here about unattractive colors, that must be old news because the sample and the swatch book colors are very nice and similar to factory privacy glass.

One thing I'm excited about is the non-traditional shades available such as 28% and 12%, among others.

I'm looking forward to trying it out but the only problem is, if it installs nicely, no scratching, etc etc, I still have to wait 3-5 years before ill know if it holds up. Does anyone already know first-hand what kind of longevity to expect?

  6. Thanks AZ1 you're right I'm kicking myself! Yeah i had the lower cushion out, that was pretty easy even considering all the HVAC hooked to it. I'm trying to remember the straps, don't specifically remember them but it does seem to ring a bell. Whoever gets the next one will know what to look for! Thanks again????

  7. I had a 2013 XJ-L last week which was impossible to get the headrests out and also could not get the seatback out for nothing. The brake light was so tight to the glass that water wouldn't even pass it, unless pushing down on it, in which it maybe moved an 1/8". Ended up cutting around that one. No light gaps but hate having the short-cut look on the outside. If any one knows how to get the seat back out of it so the deck can come out please reply. There's bound to be another one pulling in one day.

This car didnt have a fold down seat appearance like the XF in my other recent post, which also didnt fold down without manually tripping the hidden latches. I successfully got that one out but this one was a no-go. Got as far as getting the seat bottom out (easy) and removed all bolts at the bottom of the seat back, but the top portion wouldn't budge with 2 of us with nearly 40 years combined experience (but not too many Jags) searching for whatever was still keeping the thing together. Anyone else done this car?

One warning-if you plan on removing the sweeps and bottom dropping the film in, which is pretty much necessary because of the tight sides-the bottom sweep is one piece built into the side channels. You will have to cut the sweeps out. This is a time consuming car if you plan on making it look really good. :trustme

  8. We had an 02 yesterday. Yeah the little car sucks. The back window we did with the top standing straight up, was still a little tight to get to the bottom half but not terrible, but then had peanuts on the grids. Should have sanded them.

Tried to trick the quarters with Devin's sequence, the up/down button would flash like it was in some kinda manual mode, but the windows wouldn't roll. Anyone else have any luck? Went ahead and used some tricks to get a good cut, and eased it on in there but it was way too much hassle for a little convertible that looks like it should be a quick, easy job.

Turned out nice though, at the end of the day that's all that matters!

  9. Just had another 08 C350. I don't pull all Benz sweeps but these are level with the outer, and tight sides, so here's a little tip for the sweep pullers. I previously mentioned a clip in the front door panels that was a booger to pull out. It's located in the rearward upper corner behind the window trim. I figured out the trick that made it pretty easy, once you are looking at it this will all make sense, and the front sweeps literally can be removed in a couple minutes. just use needle nose to pull the center pin out of it (if you push it in like most other clips of this design the pin will fall into the door) and then look inside the remaining portion and you will see two more release tabs, push one with a pick while beginning to pry the clip out, then push the other one and it will come out. The rear panels pull out from the sweeps no tools required. And pull the headrests, trust me on this ;)

  10. Just did an 09 so ill chime in. The front panels will pop loose at the top so you can remove the sweep IF you can get the clip loose at the top of the panel behind the plastic trim that covers the felt side channel. It was pretty tight. Or you can tuck the sweep if you prefer, but it doesn't sit as low as some of other models. Also, have your heavy hook tool handy to get the sweep loose. And the felt side channels are out on the glass more than they need to be, but they aren't as tight as say, a Dodge or a Jetta. Because of the felt run channels it will be easier install if you can get the sweep out.

The rear panels release from the sweeps and you can yank them very easy.

The rear brake light dips down like others said, but the bulldozer was actually the tightest at the rest of the bottom of the glass, the brake light area was actually easier to access. Make sure your shrink is perfect and If you take your time it is possible to doze it down.

The headrests WILL pop out but you have to force them against the glass.

    Quarters are now gravy.
