  1. Hi I am a predominantly a large format graphic installer by trade, and I am looking to move on to having my own small business where I tint residential windows. I am able to install the tint and have been doing so for other companies on commercial jobs sporadically for around 5 years, but there are large gaps in my knowledge when it comes to what tints are suitable for what types of glass. My business plan was originally was that I would take calls, get measurements over the phone or by email, give a quote in Silver 20 (as I thought that was suitable for everything), and they would either have it or not. I wouldn't offer tints with a higher solar absorption that because I didn't want the risk of the glass breaking due to thermal stress. Now I'm a bit more knowledgeable about what I can and can't offer I will approach this differently. I would still take the calls, but I would offer come out and do my own survey, measure up, and do my own glass analysis. I am open to spending the money on a glass analysis kit, and I've done some research, but I'd to learn a little bit more. After my survey I'd offer what films are suitable. However, throughout my research on what is and is not suitable, I have not been able to find a great deal of definitive info, and I’m left with a lot that I am still unsure about. If any of you would be able to answer any of my questions, or point me in a direction where I could find my own information, I would really appreciate it. Also, if I am asking the wrong kinds of questions then I am open to suggestion. For info, I am based in the UK, where we have a mostly moderate climate. Here are my questions: 1. Can I tint toughened glass? a. If so, what is the range of solar absorption of window tints that is suitable b. If so, does single/double pane matter? 2. Can I tint tempered glass? a. If so, what is the range of solar absorption of window tints that is suitable b. If so, does single/double pane matter? 3. Can I tint laminated glass? a. If so, what is the range of solar absorption of window tints that is suitable b. If so, does single/double pane matter? 4. Can I tint safety glass? a. If so, what is the range of solar absorption of window tints that is suitable b. If so, does single/double pane matter? 5. Can I tint glass with a low-e coating? a. If so, what is the range of solar absorption of window tints that is suitable b. If so, does single/double pane matter? 6. Is there a maximum or minimum thickness of glass that I can tint? 7. What is the range of solar absorption of window tints that is suitable for glass that has a blind behind it, and is that governed by what type of glass? 8. What is the range of solar absorption of window tints that is suitable for glass which that is partially shaded, and is that governed by what type of glass? Many thanks in advance for help that anyone is able to offer.
