Similar to what I was going for, although my rear wasn’t 20% privacy. Still, the 70% film was the best choice to maintain legality while improving all the other specs significantly.

That is what I thought too for here in Aus. Perhaps it is different in the states? Not sure where you are located.

Thanks for confirming the back looks darker, I was starting to worry something went wrong or the wrong film was used or something. Your explanation of privacy glass makes sense. I’m sure different countries probably have different specced glass as well due to regulations and the like. I for us, because we can’t tint the front windshield, the heat rejection stuff isn’t a huge deal as so much heat will come through that window anyway. I have also noticed some rattles on the left side of the car since having the tint done. They are coming from either the door panels or the window, it’s really annoying. It’s possible that this happened when they took the door panels on and off. The car only has 1500km on it and it doesn’t sound like a 1500km car anymore. That’s about 1000 miles for you US folk. Don’t know whether to get the tint shop to look at it or ask the dealership to.

I enjoy a bit of detailing and there are some good products to protect the dash! We can’t tint out front here as that is usually the glass shattered in an emergency so we have to keep it bare legally.

Its interesting your rear tint has heat and UV rejection which makes me thing our privacy glass is quite different. I’ve been told that our privacy glass doesn’t have those properties which is why most will still tint to rears as well. We can’t tint our front windshield anyway so the heat thing doesn’t matter anyway but UV is important for if you have a child in the rear. Yours to me seems more of a mismatch of darkness rather than color. I guess you can’t have both if you have privacy glass!

Your figures sound about right and is what we were aiming for given the legal rate here is 35% front and 20% rears. I don’t remember the exact vlt of the privacy glass bare but it was around 30. I don’t know why or how but that’s what it came out as. Maybe the meter was off or in our country it’s specced lighter due to our strong regs for tint? I remember thinking it was high from what I researched and the tint guy commented it was higher than he thought it would be. He also said that adding 70 to the rear will keep it above 20 and legal - which stacks up. I do want to go get them both measured again though post tint. The front came out at 35-37 (+/- 2%) with the sample on it so that also sounds about right. So you think the back is darker? (It should be in theory). There have been some comments that the front is actually darker, which doesn’t add up unless the wrong tint was used. They should be close though as you said. Pic below amid the tint job which I think better demonstrates that the rear is darker.

That’s interesting. I assume privacy glass is also different in different countries depending on regulations etc Before my car was tinted the rear was definitely visually darker than the front. It measured as darker too with the vlt meter. I think it measured at around 30/40 something (I remember the shop saying it was lighter than usual which is 20-25 maybe?) and the front was 70/80. The legal limit here is 35 front, 20 rear. It used to be 35 all round. That’s why we put 40 on the front and 70 on the rear. We also are not allowed to tint the front windshield.

I just went and had a look at a friends Audi which has privacy glass + tinting and I could see through both sides. Their tint is definitely darker as well and below the legal limit I’m pretty sure. Maybe it’s Aus privacy glass? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I would say not a lot for a more normal car and my car is new so it doesn’t need to be inspected for rego. The chance does go up though as it’s a loud car and they get pulled over a lot. If I were to sell the car it would also then get inspected and pulled up on it.

Hmmm strange. There is definitely more glare on the rear but I was looking at the difference in visibility and transparency. I can see way more through the front then back. I think I’ll have to get them to measure again to verify now. I did witness them measure the bare windows and then with samples of tint on, but not after the full job. I guess they could have put the wrong tints on or something? I still think it could just be the front tint and its ‘black’ nature (hopefully).

Yeah that’s true. I wanted to keep it legal, even though darker does look better. It is a new car I spent a lot of money on so wanted to keep it within the limits. At least you’ll still have the $$! These things tend to happen as you age haha

Thanks, yeah maybe that’s it. Maybe it’s the various different lighting and the different hue of the privacy glass making it look like this. I think it looks good from the outside in but from the in out it irked me as you say. In terms of the Global lines this shop carries I thought (and recommended by the shop too) that this would be the best combination. If I want to keep the line the same as the front I can go 86% which has like half the properties for IR reduction etc or go 40% and move below the legal limit. If I stay with the different line that’s on the back I can do either 70% (which I did which has great heat properties or 45% which again would make it not legal.

Better photo from inside out. It does seem that from the outside the rear is darker and from the inside the front. Not sure if this is just due to the different ‘black’ tint dye on the front or maybe that’s how privacy glass works? Dark looking in, light looking out?

Thanks. I know in that photo the front looks darker than the rear but i don’t think it actually is. When you look from the outside in you can see the rear is darker. When measuring the VLT it was definitely darker on the machine. Front came in at 37% and rear was high 20s I think. I think it’s partly that the front is a different line and is marketed as being ‘black’ so in certain lights and angles it appears darker. Have uploaded more photos which hopefully show the rear as darker. Let me know if you still the front is darker. Front is car2 and rear is car3. Car1 is both.
