TINTED WINDOWS – WHAT IS THE LAW

A member of the public called to inquire about information received from a police officer that had

stopped them for having tinted windows on their vehicles drivers’ window. The officer advised that the

coloured window coating was !llegal. Is it?

In the Province of Ontario it is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to have a coloured coating

applied to the windows that are to the immediate right and left of the driver. It is also !llegal to have a

colour coating applied to the windshield.

Subsection 73(3) of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario reads as follows:

COLOUR COATING OBSCURING INTERIOR

No person shall drive upon a highway a motor vehicle on which the surface of the windshield or of

any window to the direct left or right of the driver’s seat has been coated with any coloured spray or

other coloured or reflective material that substantially obscures the interior of the motor vehicle when

viewed from outside the motor vehicle.

Drivers of vehicles with window tinting may find themselves subject to being stopped by police and

could be issued a ticket with an out of court settlement of $110.00 (fine of $85 plus $25 court costs)

Niagara Regional Police are appealing to the public, in the interest of officer and public safety, to

refrain from having coloured or reflective coatings applied to the windows of their vehicles.

That's the same as here in Florida where the law states that any window film that changes the perception of how you look at colors is prohibited! That's why I don't sell red or blue..ect...! Almost every vehicle I tinted with color film ended up getting pulled over! Plus tinting a car with color film sucks!! The film is really thin to work with!
