  1. I’m confused about you post aswell. I started at the dealership as a Tinter. That was my way in the door. They started me at a low hourly wage but I didn’t care because I knew where I wanted to be and that I was going to get there. I came into there knowing that I wasn’t going to give them no choice and they had to make me a tech. In less then a years time I got a 40% increase in pay and now I’m union with all the perks and benefits. I worked hard and help everyone out and was a star employee. You see I never finished college and I did go to tech school but I never finished either. Being a journeyman tech is always something I wanted to see to completion. They pay for my schooling/training and certifications. I get paid for lunch travel and while I’m in school. In the meantime I run my tint business on the weekends. Yes I work 7 days a week. I’ll tint five cars every weekend with one  employee I’ve hired and I’m always booked several weekends out consistently. I’ve already got one high income skill and that’s tinting. I’m developing my second high income skill. My boss has plans to eventually phase me out as a Tinter and become a Tech only. Honestly I love what I’m doing now. My boss and work environment is awesome.  Whytint you sound like you’re your own problem. It doesn’t matter whatever you do you have to put in [emoji817]. Really who cares what others techs think. When I first started the other techs didn’t respect my line of work but i feel that was my predecessor fault. He was a hack that got fired. Now it’s kinda funny they all say what are you still doing here you should go full time with your business.
I agree dont know why his here. I'm in the same boat as you are. I'm really trying to become a tech, and considering just doing the tint as a business on the side for now so how did you market, do you use a plotter? Good to hear you're doing good
  2. Dude im in the same boat. So heres my advice. Look at how many cars they sell and which cars are gonna have tint. The dealership I work at is selling roughly 150 new cars a month. They don't want the used cars tinted just the new ones from those they only actually collect on 50% the rest they have to give away cuss some people refuse to pay or just don't want the tint. So on avg I pre load 100 a month but they only actually get a return on 50%. It's 3m film which is not cheap at cost to the dealer. Also look at how much tinters make in your area on avg, around here it's 45k top earners make 90k. I made 35k but I only work 62 hours are most and every year it's less this year I'm barely gonna make 29k so I would asses how skilled you are if your really good I would say between 18 and 25 an hour is fair. Basically don't do it for less than 45k because believe it won't be worth. I hope it helps hmu if you want more details.

  3. Tinting has changed back in the day like wayyyyy back they used to take out windows. It's not necessary anymore. I do know guys that do it. for example I recently had to do an 83 k6 and my friend wanted to pull out the window, we didn't and it turned out great. Techniques have changed and and it's absolutely not necessary with today's cars. So idk me personally I wouldn't need to do it knowing how to trim rubbers really help. Truly idk who would do it on any car from the 80s forward. I've done classic cars to and still didn't have to pull out a window. Sooooooooooo[emoji1745]

  4. I got my windows tinted on my 2018 Honda Accord Sport 3 days ago and it has been raining the last couple days so today i decide to check to see if there’s any bubbles and I realize there are some minor bubbles but I also find some scratches on the outside of my windows. I’m assuming the tint guy placed the tint over the window and while cutting the shape of the window the razor went through and scratched my actual glass. Can i get some opinions amd thoughts on this please. I have had 1 car tinted prior to this and never experienced this and this guy was recommened by a friend so I decided to give him a try.

Unfortunately it was the tinter who caused it. I do accords all day long and Ive noticed the glass on these cars sratch very easily. Sorry to hear
  5. Hmm let's be real Frankie is easier but the reverse is a def like an extra tool in the tool belt. Also imo any experienced tinter shouldn't get debris on the reverse.

We Frankenstein, but like [mention=43285]Super Dave[/mention] said it will be hard on a large window.  I am sure plenty of people have mastered the reverse roll method for cars.  However, out of the 3 experienced tinters that I saw use it, there was a lot of debris in the install.
  6. You obviously didn't read what I posted. And you pretty much proved my point, it's not worth it unless you own and even then it's not like your gonna do 30 cars a month out the gate that's why I said you have to save up. And how do you know I'm not dedicated or my skills aren't there, that was offensive.

When you own a shop that do 7 figures in just tint and ppf...you will rethink think that statement....it is not worth it to you because you are not dedicated in what you do or your skill stop. I was only doing 3-6 ppf a month in 2005 when no one know what ppf is and almost gave up. I was doing Crystalline in late 2009, selling it for $500 and couldn’t sell it.... but I never gave up.  Now I eat steak 🥩 almost everyday and drink heniken for lunch. It finally paid off after all these years....cheer [emoji482]
  7. So if you're a tech why tint. Are you tinting to add some extra money. I don't think it's the same thing. The idea is mostly everyone here are ft tinters not side job or "whenever a car comes in tinter" Also what kinda of tech are you. A lube tech or mechanic? Most.... actuall all the techs and mechanics wouldn't do my job. They have zero respect for it. And as they told me it's a waste of time. I'm just wondering what your planning to do in a year or two, are you gonna be a full time tinter or a mechanic. You see unless you own a shop tinting is a dead end job where most employers don't pay benefits. And a typical work week is 60 hours. As a opposed to a job like mechanic where you do have benefits typical work week is 40 hours and anything over is o.t. I personally don't feel tint is worth it. I'm just stuck in this job and can't really do anything else. I want to become an owner but I gotta save some [emoji383] its really the only way at this point. Sorry for the long ass rant. I was just confused by your post. Thx

I’m a pre-journeyman flat rate tech with hourly guarantee. They pay me 3.25hours for a whole car. Backhalf or two fronts get 2.0 hours. When I’m not doing tint I’m doing tech stuff. The guarantee comes in when there’s no work I’ll get paid my hourly no matter what for just for being there.
  8. Hi, I recently had my 2015 Subaru Outback r&r to get a darker shade as well as better heat rejection. I knew I wanted 3m crystalline and there is only one shop in the area that installs it. They have close to 100 reviews combine on google/yelp and are rated 4.9/5. They have been in business for over 25 years as well, so they are well known as a full detail/tint shop.

I made an appointment and brought my car in. The first bad feeling I got was they pulled my car into a bay between two other cars. The car to the left was being waxed with an orbital machine. The car on the right was being detailed after a wash, and they were using compressed air to dry the vehicle. These vehicles are about 3-4 feet apart.

The tint job took a good 3 hours for my front doors as the installer said he had to do them twice due to wanting them perfect, his exact words. Well unfortunately they are far from "perfect". Just counting the bigger dust contamination, the drivers glass has 34 imperfections, the drivers quarter Glass has 21, passenger glass has 28 and passenger quarter has 18.

I went back to the shop today and the owner was very defensive at first but did say they will redo the tint this friday. He started by saying nothing in life is perfect, showed me scars from an operation saying that even doctors aren't perfect because I am in the medical profession. He then walked me over to a Tesla and showed imperfections in the tint claiming it was from another shop. He then asked if I ever applied a screen protector to a phone and had dust. Then said because it was a retint job that these will always look worse... He kept saying that he will redo it if I am unhappy, but if I am unhappy the second time, he will pay for a retint at another place of my choice and if he finds one imperfection, I have to pay for both tint jobs. I was taken aback a bit by all of this as I thought he would of been more receptive especially due to the amount of contamination.

What would you guys do? At this point I would just like him to remove the tint and refund my money, but I am sure it will be a big confrontation due to the way he reacted of me showing this to him already. After that interaction, I did take it to the shop who did my original tint and they just said that they would gladly try for me and they believe I am not being too picky, they said they just do not want to be involved and that's all they will say commenting on someone else's work. They showed me their shop and said that they clean everything daily and all he does is tint in his shop.

Thanks for any advice. The large windows are difficult to image due to reflection, but dust is trapped throughout each piece of glass similar to photos. Are you sure it's crystalline it doesnt look like It. Not sure how much you paid but it sounds like a typical tint shop. I'm surprised 3m gave them an account there set up doesnt sound pro. Next time research a bit more and do be afraid to say no if it looks or sounds sketchy.
