There are a few answers here:

    1.  Some companies buy their designs from multiple sources, meaining that they are not all designed with the same theory.

    2.  If you aren't trained by the company who's software program you use, you may be installing it differently than it was intended to be installed.

    3. Film can grow or shrink if you roll it up and let it sit for a while (especially overnight), depending on the direction you roll it (liner side in vs liner side out)

Do you have any specific examples that we could address?

Jeff is correct with his three main points.  There are a few more to take into account but they are minor and minimal to these three.  Designers design with transfer tape, film, cameras, digitizers, scanners 3D and 2D Software as well as a mix of all the above..  At the end of the day it is a philosophy depending on the designers, training and company that you are dealing with and their offering.  Cost and commitment levels are something to look at as they will impact any decision as well.  Design for flat areas is simple but like anything it is an art and the more complex the curves the more specialized the designer when it comes to PPF.

  8. Paint, Lighting, Installation and Film all take a part in this.  There are good responses from all as most films today have a minimal difference to the average end consumer if installed properly.  The top films out there on the market have way less orange peel than most factory paint.  Most of the top films on the market will actually make any paint look better and hide minor imperfections like swirls but amplify chips that are already there due to their clarity.  From a high end installation aspect it comes down to the base paint condition as well as the prep work and installation environment that makes a difference in my opinion.

  10. Flygti32,

I am glad to hear that you have seen and experienced the improvements.  3M is doing more and more on the pattern side to increase availability as well as quality but as we all know those things never happen overnight.  I'm not sure the last time that you used Digital Designs but I can say that if you get a chance try one of the newer models that was produced in 2017 and let me know what you think.  If you don't have Digital Designs 4 you can download and register a free demo of the software at www.3m.com/dd .  If you have any questions I am happy to help.

    Waxworkz,

When you say a few months ago it depends where you are and who you got your film from.  The current version of Pro Series started shipping to distributors around early June but depending on your distributor they might have had older inventory that they were still going through.  If you are in the states I would still request a sample roll and see if you notice the changes.

  11. Tonni,

As Minty and Pro-Tect Mobile mentioned a good training class is one of the best investments to start with.  Understanding kit design and alignment as well as where to start on a kit is a big part of it.  Also knowing where to make your tack points and how you focus your stretch is another big part to it.  I am happy to give you some pointers over the phone if you want to give me a call or come by the 3M booth at SEMA next week and ask for me and we can run through some tips and do some hands on demos as the show.

  14. Waxworkz,

Sorry for the delay in response.  The New, New Version that you are talking about will be available in early June.  Feel free to get in touch with myself or your local distributor and we can get you a sample.  You can keep your tack solution the same as what I posted above but I would start with about 1 mil. of Baby Shampoo in your slip solution and adjust from there.  You will find that you do not need as much slip from the start for most installations.  Let me know if you have any questions and I am happy to help!

  15. A standard two bottle solution is most widely used on the current version of Pro Series.  With the first generation of the film back in 2014 we used an all in one bottle with distilled water.  Distilled is still recommended but not a must.  Listed below is currently what I use and train other with.

Slip:     32 oz. Water with 2-3 mils. of Baby Shampoo (Soap content will change depending on humidity levels and installation temp.)

Tack:   6-8 oz. of 70% IPA in a 32 oz. spray bottle with 24 oz. of Water.  (15-25% IPA depending on what you like if you are using 70% IPA)

  16. I'm curious of this film with the stain resistance? All three in my test failed...

    Eric,

Nice video and good comparisons! I would tell you to try the following once more and see what you get for results.

Install all of the pieces of film with your solution but try using Distilled Water. Let them sit for a few minutes to set up.

Try the Sharpie test. In your original video you had the Micro Fiber balled up and it would never create enough friction on any of the films to make an impact. Wrap on finger in the Micro Fiber with one layer and then try to remove on all of the films. You will notice the difference with that method and the added friction. When you wetted the Micro Fiber it created less friction and will never work on any film. If you use a black Sharpie you may get a ghost line and if you take Isopropyl Alcohol over all of them you will see it remove from the Pro Series but not the other films.

Also try the Squeegee scuff test on all of the films and then go back over them with the Micro Fiber as indicated above to see what you get. Feel free to be aggressive with the Squeegee as it will mark all films but it will come right off of the Scotchgard Pro Series with the Micro Fiber. Again, these tests show the low surface energy of this film and that does relate to daily applications of stain resistance and scratch resistance.

All of the films will scratch with the Scotchbrite pad but you should notice that the Pro Series will start to go away faster. I would try to do one pass or something like a letter Z to see what type of results you get. If you go up and down in the same motion on all films you will eventually go deep enough that no film will come back from the damage. All of the films shown do have similar properties but you will most likely see that the Pro Series resists the scratches more and that they will go away faster on their own.

I hope this helps and thank you for your posts and feedback!

    Thank you,

    Todd Bergman

  17. Here is what I can offer.  3M has a released Technical Data Sheet that I am happy to email anyone who wants it with the following tests below that you can compare with any other films if they post or have similar data and tests.  A majority of these tests are standard for OEM requirements.

    Peel Adhesion

Stain Resistance (Unleaded Gas, Kerosene, Transmission Fluid)

    Gravelometer

    Tensile

    Elongation

I think that most of us can agree that most films out there on the market today have not been around for seven years or more.  Regular Scotchgard Paint Protection Film went through its last major revision about nine years ago and had a five year warranty on it.  I would say that in most cases that the film out performed the 5 year warranty given to it.  I personally have a 2005 F-150 with film on it that was installed in 2005 and it has never been in a garage in its life in Colorado.  That is nine years this August and it still has not failed.  Every region will weather in different ways and like anything if you do not care for something then it will always change the outcome vs. the customer that did.

All that I am trying to point out here is that the above photo shows film that was over two years past the factory warranty.  At the end of of the day PPF is a protective measure or sacrificial surface that we are installing and making claims that films will last a lifetime or past what the manufacture is willing to offer will do none of us in the industry any good.

Yes, 3M also does offer a full line of Car Care products as well for the installer to reccomend and upsell to customers.

    Thank you,

  18. I would say that videos are good to show comparisons even though not everything is a real world scenario but also keep in mind that other film companies have rated their films against competition with similar tests so many of the videos are going to address those tests.  The squeegee test as well as the Sharpie test are not real world tests but it does show that a film has low surface energy that will make things stick less to it and harder to damage if it can't grab and bite into the film as easy.  Pleople wax their vehicles and use paint sealants as they reduce the surface energy to help protect in the same way.  At the end of the day 3M has always been a conservative company that will do tons of testing as well as testing that is required for OEM's when a majority of other films have never gone through or passed some of these test.  I am sure more videos and installer feedback will be showing up out there over the near future and it will come down to what the customer wants as well as what the installer likes to install and makes sense to their buisness.

    Thank you,

  19. All film will have a little learning curve as the industry and technology of the films change over time.  For some installers and companies Gel had never been heard of until a few years ago but now it has been a solution that many people use on a daily basis.  What I can add to this is that the listed solution below will produce flawless results with Scotchgard Pro from our trials and I can confirm that after having an Open House Event yesterday with over 40 installers that attended as well as being on the road now showing the film to customers that there has not been one negative response for installation issues.

Water Quality is never the same where you go and for that reason we have eliminated any varriables and use Distilled Water Only.  With that being said you can mix a normal two bottle solution with Distilled Water in your solutions to get awesome results.  For Kits you can also mix a one bottle solution that is the following and it works great as well without having to worry about two solutions for your installation.

    Two Bottle Solution

    8 oz. 70% Isopropyl Alcohol

    24 oz. Distilled Water

    32 oz. Distilled Water

1.5 - 2.0 Mils. of Baby Shampoo or Aveno Baby Shampoo/Wash

    One Bottle Solution

    8 oz 70% Isopropyl Alcohol

    24 oz. Distilled Water

2.0 Mils. of Baby Shampoo or Aveno Baby Shampoo/Wash

The water quality is key and I have had a few installers question me about having to use Distilled Water but at $1.00 a gallon it is less than any special installation solution out there or Gel.  During our Open House we were going through about two or three gallons of Distilled Water for every roll of 24" material installed so for less than $0.10 per kit installed.  It was well worth it to take any questions out about water quality and to produce the same results every installation over and over.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions as I am happy to answer them and can also put you in touch with fellow installers in you region that had issues when they first tried the film with Tap Water but will swear by the above listed Mixtures and have no current issues.

    Thank you,
