Salary Expectations

My Mom is contemplating going to school at Paint Bull and moving down by me in the Baldwin County/Mobile AL area. She thought she would start out doing paint and upholstery repair at auto dealers but could expand to boats (we're on the bay and 45 minutes from the Gulf) or going into furniture stores. She liked how professional Paint bull seemed to be and that they would send a salesman down here to round up her first accounts.

Someone she is talking to said she should at least make 50,000 first year (she would be perfectly happy with 35,000) and wants to know if that is realistic at all.

Also, if there is any other advice you can give her, she would appreciate it.

Class-wise, she is skipping the glass repair.

50K first year is hard work.. First you need to start getting custys which in this economy is very hard. I think 1//3 of that is reality.. Still working hard and building clients... Lots of people would rather not fix things unless they really need it.. This is at least starting out..

Be careful they always tell you high numbers to get you in the door.. If you had all the numbers on paper in a perfect world it would work. They all do this.. Just my two cents.

I do PDR, Plastic Bumper repair, Interior repair, Wheel repair, Paint touch up, windshield chip repair.. But it is really slow..

I live on the Mobile Bay, in Alabama, and my Mom will probably stay around here (15 minutes to downtown Mobile, heart of booming Baldwin County (Fairhope/Daphne/Spanish Fort) and 45 minutes to Gulf Shores, AL. We've been hit by the recession to some extent, but nothing compared to other areas of the country. We're actually still growing, just at a slower rate.

I got some training at Paint Bull about 7 years ago. Since then ive been to about 5 other related training packages and NOTHING compared to the Paint Bull. I love their structured class and facility. I highly endorse them. HOWEVER, now is not the time to try to make it from scratch in the recon business. The old timers are even having a hard time right now. Hope you choose wisely!

I agree , companies always blow things up so u will sign on the dotted line I have been in the mobile biz for 9 years and with auto dealers slowing down the recon process by not selling cars I do a quarter of what I normally do' I do PDR, Bumper Repair, Touch UP, Vinyl,Velour,and Leather repair,Spray-on Bedliners,Vinyl Pinstriping,Door edge Gaurd and Wheel Lip Moldings, so when I go somewhere I will at lease get one or the other.be wise in your decision.

My Bro owns Desired interiors and I can assure you that Interior repair has dropped off to next to nothing around here. I am in Pensacola and he use to do lots from pensacola to the Mississippi line and now they only want to do one or two cars a week.

You have dropped off the one thing that in most area's will do well, if you have sales and marketing skills. Windshield repair we are finding is coming out tops during what some see as a recession, reason being it saves money. I would not advice that you go to a multi trade supplier but to a specialist training and supplies centre, in my opinion Delta Kits would take some beating. It is funny how on this forum some guys are saying the name PB with affection and that generally in the trade and amongst the other forums it is sen as a training mill that does not do the job well. Try asking your question on the Doording forum and you will get a completely different answer. Of course WSR is the cheapest to get into, you can work from the vehicle you own at the moment, it will be the quickest to get into profit. Watch out for the Belron advert, it is making customers think about WSR and they cannot do all the work, it is great.
