All laminated glass should be coated with a thin clear film to prevent spalling. This is one of the major flaws in laminated glass. It takes such high levels to fracture the glass that the spray of small fragments in much more dangerous than that of annealed glass. The government and military knows this. Humvey windows are coated with 3M 2 Mil Ultra films to prevent injury to passengers.
