Blackout on a window with a mail slot

Recommended Posts

If there are "flaws" in any glass they can cause it to break film or no film. Adding dark film to glass increases the amount of heat absorbed from its "naked " state.

This would speed up any temperature changes especially in the the morning s in the winter here in Canada.

In Texas where its a million degrees all the time you may be ok. If it were my install I'd point out there is no warranty on black film installs.

In the case I'm referring to ,heat strengthened glass with a "slot " was spec'd . Plate glass with a  slot was installed the first time and it broke hours after the film was installed.

The replacement to spec heat strengthened glass is still there years later.

The GC flipped his $h!T when the first pane broke because he caught the glass shop in there error or deceit by installing the plate glass.

For the hole in the glass the best you can do is let it dry a bit and "shave" like on an auto install. The edge is the edge. At the perimeter a tight black caulk line should be acceptable to the site.

If you would like more info on why glass breaks have a look at these sites:

If there is no room for the glass to grow from the heat=safe film or not,it can break/crack the glass

I used black silicone on a aquarium to hide daylight at the top edge,,,then I didn't have to tint the other 40 of them=paint worked and didn't bleed up the top edge trim that he didn't like(he said thanks for the black silicone idea)
