  1. I was going down my list of interior decorators today and I called this one guy... introduced myself and explained why I was calling, and he starts saying something like yeah we talked to you yesturday right? I was like, no.. this is my first call. He then explains that he needs his sunroom tinted and asked if I could give him a quote over the phone, so I did.

Heh.. it's going to be funny if he has me tint the sunroom. Selling tint by cold-calling. LOL :shock:dunno

  2. I have the chance to put in a bid for a flat glass job.. commercial, fairly good size.

This is my first commercial bid since I've been on my own, and I really want to do my best with the proposal even if I don't win.

Any suggestions?? I don't have to present it to a board or anything like that... My contact person at the company will do that, I just have to put together something for him to show the bigwigs.

    Thanks!!

  3. I wasn't sure where to put this - but since it does have to do with marketing, I figured I would try here.

I'm going to be doing a mailing, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on printing out the address labels. The last mailing I did was rather small and I just downloaded the template from the Avery (sp?) site and manually typed them in.

This mailing is going to be much bigger, and I really would rather make it as easy as possible.

I have Office.. (word, excel, etc) I'm sure there is some feature to do this but I don't know how...

Any suggestions?? I thought about using a database type program, but then I would have to create a new 'customer' for each address, which is just way overkill for what I need.

    Thanks!!

  4. Interesting question.. I'll have to call my rep as well and see as I've often wondered that.

Regardless of what the sample sheet says, the place I used to work for told people tinting your windows got rid of all the glare.. :phone Used to p1ss me off cause after I would tint the windows, the customer would be like - wtf?? There's still glare.

My guess is it's just some formula taking in to account the amount of light that is blocked by the tint..

  5. Well, they lost out on not only that place, but future bids that anyone you may talk to needs.

That is one thing I am very, very 4|\|4L about... returning phone calls, being polite, showing up on time (many times for places that are far away I'll get there like way early and just drive around a bit!!) etc. All things that *should* be common business practices.. but I guess these contractors have too much money and don't care about more work??? :thumbdown

  6. majority of the sales people around here don't return my calls, give misinformation, outright lie, or are so unprofessional you would never consider hiring them for a contract

I hear that from so many homeowners regarding other contractors... It's amazing how some people run their business.

Anyway, welcome to the board. I don't really have any suggetions - just wanted to say hi!!

  7. I had a job the other week that needed the sidelights done. All the holes but one were caps.. they just used caulk for the last hole.

So I went on a hunt for caps..

The one place I went to asked what kind of door was it.. I said I didn't know. He said the caps could be different depending on the maker. I was like - ok... well, how many types of caps to you have. He said 1. :rollin

I asked to see it cause I know what the one I need looks like.

Needless to say it wasn't the one I needed... People make things so much harder then they need to be.

So then I go to the street the house is on and talk to the builder and get a couple bags from him. :rollin:)

Anyway, I'd like to get more since this happens fairly often...

Does anyone know of anyplace to get them??

    Thanks!!

  8. Just make sure you tell him exactly why you want the windows tinted.

I know that sounds basic, but the shop I used to work for never really asked that of the customer... or at least not enough. We would get to the job with one type of film, talk with the customer for like 5 minutes and find out it wouldn't do what they were looking for.

Granted, that is the job of the person doing the estimate, but while it's not 'rocket science', evidently it could be missed.

Since I'm on my own now, I make dang sure I know what the end result is that the customer is looking for. :spit

  9. I was at a customer's house today doing an install. My boss sold her on V48. After we put film on the two sliders, she saw it and said that it was too dark. I then asked her for the reason behind getting the film in the first place, and she said to protect against fading. I asked if heat or glare were concerns, and she said no.

According to the specs, the difference between V48 and V58 is like 13% more heat blockage. She went with V58.

After leaving the job, I was talking with my co-worker who was there with me and my question to him, (if V48 would even really make that big of a difference) was at what point does customer satisfaction go above the purpose for the film?? Today was raining... so it wasn't exactly the best day to look at windows with film on them.

My contention was that it's only a 13% difference, and if she thinks 48 is too dark, every time she goes into her living room, she's going to say to herself "Boy that's dark".

Did I suggest the wrong film?? When she saw the 48 on the doors, the first thing she said to me was what would happen if in a few weeks she isn't happy with it?? That right there, when someone asks me, is a tip-off that there is a concern and maybe the customer shouldn't get the film the sales guy had suggested.

If she hadn't of said that, I think I would have tried to tell her on a sunny day it won't look dark, etc.

    I dunno....
