I've removed film before and understand how to steam it but all those films were only several years old and not 20 years old and cracking. My only real concern is paint coming off on such a noticeable area and was hoping there was a tried and true way to remove old cracking film.
Besides steaming, any tricks of the trade I should know about?

I have a 97 993 with the original fender splash guards on it. They are cracking and need to be removed and replaced.
Paint is also original and non clear coated porsche red. I know as I've polished this car years ago. The paint is near perfect and we'd like to keep it that way if possible....
I've informed the owner of the risks but would still like to do this the most safe way possible?
Is there a trick to dealing with film this old and bad?
TIA Josh

Update, I started the removal today and everything went smoothly. No paint coming off at all.
I steamed it too death, basically melting it and then carefully scraping it off. Next will be to remove the adhesive.... ugh
Thanks for all the input.
