My friend playing with film and expensive toys

Recommended Posts

:hmmm I feel a few questions brewing... can you explain how this test is set up in a little more detail?

This is what he said, it is really by no means a scientific test, he just wanted to see through his very expensive infrared camera what effects the different films would have.

After some discussion with Sean at Lomas Glass and Tint yesterday I decided it would be fun to test some of the tints he uses over there. Most of these are advertised to block XX% IR and UV. As some of you have probably experienced, some tinted vehicles still get excessively hot in the interior, where some do not.

Sean provides a really nice, almost clear film that he can install on a windshield, or any other glass, including a home ( I assume? ) I will let him fill you in on the exact tints so I don’t screw it up. I can tell you from testing that this would be excellent on the windows in your house for energy savings if you do not have a "low E" glass already. Thickness of the films was also measured, with the thickness of the film not being much of a factor if any.

The first image is a before and after shot simply by placing the tint film in front of the FLIR Infrared Camera's detector and a set distance. Without going to much into how the detector in the camera works, you can see the instant drop in energy that is transmitted through the film. This is the case with all three samples provided by Lomas Glass and Tint. The first one is labeled " No Metal Ceramic ". Second, is a "No metal IR" and the last is labeled "No Metal" . Some interesting results.

Way cool!

Do the same with a dyed film and you'll see why undercover and PI types go for limo dyed film only.
