2004 BMW 5 Series

The door panels looks really tricky but I think I figured it out. Also the rear window looks pretty easy to tint but I know it would be similar to the newer 7 series with the electronics in the trunk. Sure enough I pulled back the panel and saw a bunch of electronics on the driver's side trunk.

My guess is to stuff a big towel there to collect any solution that drips down there but should actually keep a towel there for at least 2 days because there will be excess water that is still trapped on the rear deck lid and might not drip down unless you are making a turn.

From what I gather, the rear door panels are held together by 2 screws and clips. Pop off all the clips around the door after removing the screws and you are suppose to be able to lift the door panel right up. After you take the panel off, you need to remove this plastic clip off the door panel by depressing the metal tab. Stick that plastic clip back onto the door and when you are ready to reinstall the door panel, just slip the top on the door panel ledge and push the panel right back onto the door. Everything will lock back in and click together.

Do not try to remove the wooden trim like the older models because they do not come off. If the car comes with the factory screen, you will need to get a hook tool to stick into the top corner and lift the metal tab up a little in order to pull that screen off between the rollup and the quarter glass.

I hope I didn't miss anything. It is always a challenge to work on a new car and with cars that costs around 60K and owners that are very meticulous, I hope this info helps everyone out so they don't cause any damage while their car is being tinted. Good luck

      Cracked glass

      The crack indicates thermal stress, however, the edge of the glass may have an imperfection (bur or clam shell chip). The crack does run 90 degrees out from the edge and curves as it follows any weaknesses in the pane itself. I have attached a pictured of what tempered glass looks like when it breaks and alongside it what a plate (or float) and heat-strengthened glass looks like when it breaks. The outer panel my be tempered should indicate so by a stamp etched on the glass surface in one corner. It should indicate tempered. Plate glass has no indicators, however, heat-strengthened glass will crack in the same manner as plate glass. I'm an unsure whether heat-strengthened glass requires a stamp. Tempered glass is 4 times stronger than plate and heat-strengthened is 2 times stronger than plate. 1 in 24 is indicative of edge imperfection. I could not find the solar absorption rate of DN 50, but if it is similar to competitive films, there should be no issue with that installation setting (including a straight line shadow). This, too, points back to edge imperfection as the cause. And finally, I spy drapes in a close position, correct? If so, it would be helpful to crack open during sun exposure; this to assist in allowing trapped heat between the glass and drapes to dissipate.

      Cracked glass

      Hello. I recently installed Johnson Daylight Natural DN 50 on a couple of windows. Solar energy rejection is 39%. The windows are double pane and the glass is supposed to be tempered 4mm + tempered 6mm. The roof overhang shades the top 1/3 - 1/2 of the windows. However, a few days after installation I noticed that one of the glass has cracked, presumably due to thermal stress. Should I remove the film from the rest of the windows? I installed the film on 24 of these windows (6 tiny houses) so now 1 out of 24 is broken. Or is it more likely that I just got unlucky and the glass had a defect? Is shading from the roof overhang such a big factor? The glass cracked. Is it really tempered? I thought tempered glass would shatter, but not crack. Thanks!

      Residential Film without blue hue?

      Take a look at 3M's Nightvision or LLumar's Dual Reflective series, they both have a warm tone to them.

      Steer clear of Black Armour, Suntek, ASWF. The others are good choices if you are in Australia. Check out the reviews of the installer too. It’s not just the materials that have to be proper. Never go for the cheapest!!!

      Residential Film without blue hue?

      Hey guys I am in the process of having window film installed in my home but have a question about which brand I should go with. Hoping yall can help me out. I have a room that faces a busy street and as a result my blinds pretty much always stay closed. I love having natural daylight but not so much people being able to see what i'm doing in my room/all my expensive equipment. I used to work in the window film industry as a helper/installer/salesman when I was in highschool and we did a lot residential/commercial work. The specific brand of film we used always left a certain blue and cool appearance. Is there any brand of residential film that does not have this effect? I mainly just cannot stand having blue light amplified and am looking for a film that has a neutral shade to it or even a warm/yellow hue. I have single pane windows and I do not necessarily care about heat rejection but if I have to pay more for a ceramic film rather than a dual reflective or a standard film I am willing to if that helps solve the issue. Again, any help is really appreciated with this there are so many new window film brands out there and it really is cool to see how far the industry has come.

      Automotive Tint Comparison

      LLumar, 3M and Solargard have in the industry as far back as the genesis of window film mid-1960's). Solargard is the younger of the three and all others came to play in the last 20 or so years. I've had all three on my vehicles over the years and my current is 3M Crystalline on my Jeep since 2015. It still has stable color, scratch coat is holding strong and impeccable adhesive clarity. Never been garaged. My choice toady would be 3M or LLumar.

      Hook up with Glassy Business and get all the ins and outs of pro vs DIY with window film. That company goes back way before my retirement in 2015. I want to believe they are/were a Vista Film dealer and I cannot remember the owner's name. Peace out.
