GM Holden Glass engineer enlightens

Recommended Posts

Had a guy in last week who stayed around whilst I tinted his new Captiva and what a wealth of knowledge this guy was.

He was the dude responsible for anything glass in Holdens.

Some of the points we chewed the fat over and our discussions in 3 hours.

Do you know why a lot of new cars have no aerials for example?

Well it's all down to drag and the movement of air over the exposed aerial.

Not as I suspected to stop vandalism.

One could hardly imagine how miniscule the drag saving would be but it all adds up apparently....that's why door handles on the outside are so flush as well.

Why are we seeing  more cars with no felt on the door rubbers and channels?

This is all down to safety not cost.

To put a glue felt strip on the rubber increases the risk of carcinogens and that's why we see no felt on door seals, Bailley channels, boot liners etc..

What happens in manufacture is that these rubbers are coated with a polyurethane spray as it is extruded and covers the rubbers to a depth of 14 micron.

They should be regularly cleaned.

Front windshields of the new VF now are sun controlled.

The laminate has been changed to absorb IR.

Originally the previous VE has green glass on both sides of the clear laminate, now the new VF has green on the outside with a small amount of metal in the laminate and clear on the inside.

Why not adopt this for the rear screen then? Cost...they tried.

Why not continue to have a black matrix border on windups like the VT model? Fashion trends.

We tint front windshields in Korea and we are seeing more of such sun-control lami glass from imported European and Japanese cars.

There are several reported cases of glass breakage during heat shrinking on these types of glass. Please be careful.

No we really didn't get into that except for one thing....the amount of damaged glass due to tinters where service departments lodged claims to the factory for broken door trims, scratched glass, burnt rubbers, demisters not working, fell on very deaf ears.....go back to your tinter.
