  1. That is how I feel about it, window tint shades being illegal is more for police being able to ticket you for the government to make money...not so much about safety.  Also highly used for probable cause to pull people over to check for other illegal activities.  I was on a police forum once and they were asking officers do they ticket out of town people for illegal tint.  99% of them stated absolutely not, they just use it to pull them over.  For example I was pulled over last year by a State Trooper because my window tint "looked dark".  He quickly measured it and it was legal, so he moved right into the conversation on why he really pulled me over without missing a beat.  What he was pissed about was he tried to check my speed (3 attempts) and was unable to because of my Laser Jammer.  They are 100% legal in GA, but he wanted to let me know that he knows I have one and that they are pushing to have them illegal the following year.  I also thought about the times I was pulled over for window tint in the past (roughly 18 ticketed times and around 6 non-ticketed times) not once have the officer ever stated it was a because of safety of me being able to see.  Every single time that a reason was given, it was because the officer wants to be able to see the driver and passenger of the vehicle for their own safety.  Which I can understand to an extent, but if I was planning on shooting the officer I can easily have the gun to side of me, pull it up and shoot him.  Window tint or no window tint would not matter because he still wouldn't be able to see the gun nor know my intentions.

  2. Below is the exemption law from Michigan.gov on window tinting exemption.  So instead of just having a 4" strip on the front doors, you can have the whole window tinted.

The use of tinting is limited to the rear side windows, the rear window if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides, and the top 4 inches of the front side windows. There is a limited exception for medical necessity with a doctor's prescription, which allows for tinting to be applied to the front side windows as well. Michigan does not have a specification for the darkness of the window application, but does prohibit applications with a solar reflectivity greater than 35%.

  3. Also make sure you read exactly what the exemption states, it will not allow you to do anything.  In GA it is completely useless because you still can't tint your windshield and the lowest your sides/rear (car) can measure is 20% after the +/- 3% error.  So the only option would be a 25% which 99.9% of shops here don't carry.  The only way here to get away with lower is if the cop doesn't know the law on exemption.

  4. Here they just want the money.  Most of my cars are legal now being in the 35-50 range.  Only got 1 left at 20 sides/rear that is at a performance shop.  I am still deciding it it will be a show car only or not.  If show car I will do 5 sides/rear and 35 windshield since it will rarely be on the street.  If I will be driving it here and there I will go to 35 on the sides/rear.  All windshields are at 50.

  5. Had an interesting Saturday...had a Civic that only wanted the sides tinted (20 on rear door/quarter and 35 on front door/quarter) with nothing on the rear window.  They did not want to be pulled over.  Tried to talk them into 35 all the way since the 20 on the back will look light since no rear glass tint anyway.  They still paid almost full pop so no biggie.  Then a bunch of 2 window jobs which are perfect.
