Ended up doing it without removing the shelf, looked a bit of a pain to get it out. It was tight between the brake light and the screen but got it in ther ok and squeegeed with the bulldozer.

Did one today - removed the shelf, comes apart in two pieces. Fold rear seats down, remove c-pillars, remove end pieces on the back part of the seat (two 10mm bolts underneath bench seat) The fist part of the shelf is plastic and unclips with some gentle persuasion, then the main part of the shelf can be removed, I got into the boot and pushed about 12-15 small grey clips (poppers) upwards with a trim tool, this is all that holds the shelf in, also unplug the brake light from underneath. First time took about 20mins but was certainly worth it.
