Attention NY area Tinters

Recommended Posts

We all know that NY has very restrictive mandates governing what qualifies as "legal tinting". The NYC, nassau and suffolk police are pushing Governor Cuomo to sign into law a bill that would require window tinting to become part of the annual NYS inspection process. He has until Nov 28th to do so, if the bill passes this means that no film can be applied to any windows on a passenger car and anyone with film applied would have to have it remove starting Jan 1 2017.

I'm sure that everyone agrees dark tint is a threat to police officers and should be enforced but if this bill passes window tinting in NY is thing of the past.

I urge everyone to make a call to Albany and tell Governor Cuomo to veto this bill until a compromise can be reached.

Call 518 455 3511 Bill# S6034a and explain that this bill would put our entire industry out of business.

Do I hear ceramic upgrade $$$$

Reading the legislation proposal does not say no windows can be tinted, read it again.

Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 375(12-a) requires a minimum of 70 percent light transmittance on front windshields, on front seat side windows and on rear side windows of station wagons, sedans, hardtops, coupes, hatchbacks and convertibles. However, this crucial safety feature is not currently included in the annual safety and emissions inspections vehicles are subjected to pursuant to the Vehicle and Traffic Law. This bill provides a proactive method to ensure compliance with existing law by adding light transmittance standards to the list of safety features provided in State law, in order to address and curtail the proliferation of blacked-out windows in a routine and predictable fashion.

Should this bill become law, vehicle inspection centers would be required to purchase an inexpensive device which is readily available in retail markets to calibrate the tint density and perform the requisite testing. These devices generally retail for between $100-$150 and are already owned and operated by many auto body shops throughout the State. If the glass on a vehicle is found to be tinted beyond 30 percent of light transmittance, that vehicle would not pass the New York State safety inspection. In this instance, the window tint would have to be removed or altered before it could be re-inspected for compliance.

I don't think the Donald or the rest of the celebrities are gonna like it, but there are a number of states already with this. They will be allowing 30% and a lot of southern states are only allowing 35%.

Really isn't anything new or to worry about Jonnytint

Have a great day

This new legislation is not a change in the "Tint law". It's simple enforcing the existing law on the books, which is 70% min light transmission. The article is mistaken. People are uninformed regarding Tint shading percentages. Ie 70% min transfer means 30% window Tint. It's unfortunately just not true.

Any film added to the factory 70% will fail under the current system and now it will be part of the nys inspection.

Basically the windshield and front driver/passenger windows need to be net 70% or higher.  Depending on the VLT of the stock glass, your legal options would be 70% and up as long as it still meters atleast 70% once applied.  Which i thought this was the law already.  The only difference now is it will be part of the inspection like NC and VA.  This means if it meters illegal, you do not pass inspection and can't receive your tag/sticker.

If you have a 90% film it should pass on some auto glass...80% may also squeak by on a few.  Same law as before, what do you do now?  Same as VA and NC, if someone wants less than legal they will have to remove the film before inspection and reapply after.  This is not bad since it is only the front doors and windshield.
