hello my name is ray.. im an addict (recovering). cigarettes are an addiction, phisycal addiction. you have to break the cycle of the addiction to quit. it was easier to quit c*caine than cig's. I was so addicted to cigaretts if I ran out of smokes I would have died before I made it to a store in time.

for those wanting to quit heres how I did it. you have to break the addiction, ie habbit. to break the habbit you have to teach your body to not expect the nicotine. every cigarette you smoke is smoked on impulse. your sub-concious smokes the cig because your body tells it to. breaking the habbit is key.

first thing, the 5 minust rule.

the 5 minuet rule. you smoke when you get the urge, the urge is always the same time, the same excuse the same motivation. eat something, smoke. drink something, smoke. clock strikes 1/2 pass, smoke. jump in your car for the ride home from work... yep, you reach for the pack. this is where the 5 minuet rule comes in. wait, 5 minuets. when your addiction tells you to smoke, wait 5 minuets then smoke. you will be looking at the clock counting the seconds... its hard to do but breaking the habbit starts here.

once you are ok with waiting 5 minuets (you will know because it gets easier) its time to switch.

time to switch. if you smoke marlboro reds, switch to lights. if you smoke lights switch to ultra lights and so on. this will lower the nicotine. making your body (addiction) less dependent on cigaretts. this combined with the 5 minuet rule is causing your body break the cycle of when it needs to smoke. remember, the 5 minuet rule is till the end.

still switching, 2 weeks... every 2 weeks switch to the next lighter cigarette. keep switching until you end up with carltons. 2 things will happen. 1st, no one will bum smokes off of you because carltons suck, and second these are the last cigs you will smoke. next is pick a date.

pick a date. be reasonable and be true. the carltons, the waiting 5 minuets, the picking a date and sticking to it will be easy. once the date is here, do what you have to to make it through the first day, make sure there are no smokes around for temptation. make it through this day, you will find your sub concious looking for smokes but the urge will be controlable. good luck ray.

JUST STICK TO YOUR GUNS! I quit cold turkey, only smoked for four years though. Bought a motorcycle with the money I saved!

Please guys dont take this the wrong way, but anyone with kids who smokes is an azzhat IMO. You are setting a bad example and taking years off your life, shortening the time they will get to spend with you. I know all you parents love your kids and say you'll do anything for them, well why not quit smoking then.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Everyone I know that has quit and never gone back has done it COLD TURKEY!!!

I think that if you have the will power to go cold turkey then you will have the will power to stay off cigs, dip, etc. in the long run.

It may not be easy, but it will pay off in the long run. :twocents

Good luck to who ever is trying and for those that have already been succesfull in quitting.

quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do until you set your mind to quit 100% and the longer you can stay away from them the easier it gets, its so easy to just say "Im just gonna smoke one" then the next thing you know you are back to a pack a day, you have to stick with your plan! It will be one of the best things you have ever done, Im not gonna go on and on But I will say once you do quit you will feel like a new person its totally worth it for you and your friends and family!!!Plus you can tint a couple extra cars a week now that you dont stop and smoke after every other window $$$$$$

I couldnt agree more. I never smoked in front of my kids, ever. They have no idea I smoke. But, today, it starts. I am going to quit. Im feeling good about it. This is just another test to pass to build confidence in myself.

I have quit heroin and Cigarette were a lot easier. The only reason that recovering heroin addicts ,for example me, would say that heroin was easier is because after I quit dr*gs and alcohol is that cigs were a crutch. I honestly have to say that heroin was a lot worse. The immediate withdrawals from heroin or any opiate far out way any cigarette withdrawals and for about three months after quitting heroin my head was seriously messed up. It was hard to derive any pleasure from life. Cigarettes by comparison were tough and I had a couple dry runs at it before I actually made it happen but it wasn't nearly as hard. I used the patch at first and made it a week into that then one day I forgot to put the patch on in the morning. I was tinting a car around lunch time and I had the patches out in my truck but I decided that I had already made through half the day and that was a good leaping off point. I haven't smoked a cigarette in three years and it is one of the best decisions I ever made. Best advice I can give on quitting cigs is make the decision with no reservations whatsoever. Throw away all remnants of cigs lighters, ash trays, etc... and don't go to bars, casinos, or any other place where you have to smell it for a while until you can handle it. As far as kids are concerned, my mom is the reason why I started smoking. When I was a kid I remember wanting to go where she was cause I wanted to smell the second hand smoke. Which means I was addicted way before I ever actually picked up a cigarette. Just recently I quit drinking caffeine too not because of any health reasons but because I was addicted and didn't feel like being chained to have to have a cup of coffee in the morning and several cups of tea and Dr. Peppers a day. My will power isn't really stronger than anyone else. Any one can do it just have to make that decision and give it your all.
