It even happens sometimes when I just cut a pattern for one side at a time.

If you have just started tinting you shouldn't be trying to double cut, at least not until you have mastered cutting a pattern that fits.

First thing to do when you do not know the car from past installs is to check all interior and exterior weather-strip to see how they match up with the glass sandwiched between. This will give you a good indication of how large the pattern needs be side to side.

Start by lining up the factory edge of the film piece along the bottom ensuring enough overlap for a tuck under the rub rail once applied to the inside.

For side verticals, strive to hide the edge of the film from the car owner's view, both from an interior perspective and an exterior perspective. This will have you cutting or marking (with china marker not knife slits) one side vertical first. Next, slide the film to the freshly cut/marked, allowing an overlap of the edge with an amount of film needed to disperse on both sides once installed.

An example would be if I need only one eighth inch to hide both side vertical edges, then on that first cut the film need slide toward it to a point of having one quarter inch overlap of that edge (One quarter will be split between each side). Cut the opposite side vertical and slide the pattern back slightly further than one half the way, splitting the one quarter inch between the two side verticals. Lock your film down to the glass, lift bottom edge of film and bump glass down slightly for micro-edge cut.

If the glass has a slope like most from door glass does, then you want a tad more overlapping the front side vertical. This to aid in keeping the micro-edge aligned properly as well as both side verticals not showing light with the edge hidden from view.
