Attaching security film

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone has some pointers. Quoting a job I'll most likely land for small amount of 8.5mil security film. They want it attached with dow995?? It's going on residential dual pane wood frame windows. Not sure how easy this stuff is to apply or how long you wait after installing film...

Thanks

Its caulking . If you have not installed any then pay a pro and tell him the bead size and appearance expectations.

Have a look at the video in this link for a good example of how and when not to waste your time with caulking security film.

There are simply some installs where it will not work as expected.

Depending on the age and condition of the wood frame you could just be making it easier for the B/E guy to get in safely.

Dow 995 on a resisdental application will not usually offer any significant benefit of added safety. In order to achieve what is recommended for safety, you need1/2 inch bite on film as well as 1/2 inch bite on frame and 3/4 at 45*. Also if they are painted frames, you are attaching 995 to paint and the bond is only as strong as the paint to wood bond . ..not 995 to frame. .02

I agree 100% with Tom here and will add one other point:

If you have to replace a non-anchored piece of film, it a simple R&R.  Once that piece is anchored, you could potentially be looking at replacing the frame as well.  You have to stop and ask if it's worth it, considering the minimal safety increase Tom described.
