Law VS Cutting 3rd brake light out

Just wondering if anybody has trouble with local police or highway patrol in their area about 3rd brake lights and whether the are or are not aloud to be covered by tint. I personally dont give a sh!t. I tint right over the damn things because I think cutting them out looks bad, plus without a plotter its a pain in the ass! But the other day I tinted and old ass busted Buick for a CHP and he made me cut it out, stating that is was illegal to tint over it. As far as I can understand, here in Cali the law seems very vague and kinda sketchy when it comes to this. What do you guys think?

well, IMHO, I usually tint over them if they come out relatively easy, for example, I won't pull a back seat/rear deck out of a grand prix to tint behind the brake light, but in a cavalier I will, it's easy to take apart....however, when I install 5% I always cut around it just to be safe, and I know, 5% isn't safe anyway, but I do it regardless. just me tho :cool
