Bird collisions

Recommended Posts

Had a customer call asking if we install anything for bird hits. She had done some research and found collidescape.org. Looks like perforated vinyl for an exterior install. Anyone ever used this stuff or anything else. I have heard of this problem on high rise building but have never had a call on it before. Any info would be great.

Bird sees silhouette and attempts to fly to the other tree with the other birds he sees. Oops that other tree is a reflection = dead or injured bird.

Bird is hungry attempts to fly to the other tree the other birds are eating in.Oops that other tree is a reflection = dead or injured bird.

A more effective solution is to diffuse the reflection through patterns or full coverage designs.

Birds see in the UV range of the spectrum and as it passes through glass, their eyes tell them they can fly on. The best way to avert bird collisions with glass is to install a film that has a linear pattern of UV absorption and reflection across the web. This give them a view similar to jail bars or a picket fence and they resist flying toward it.

A professor in PA who has studied bird collisions holds the patent of this type film construction. He worked with CPFilms many years ago by having some produced and installed to 4 x 4 glass panels which were then suspended between trees out in a wooded area of PA to see whether it would actually work. It did, but the demand for this type product was so low no one wanted to dive into making, marketing and selling it. So, we are left to rely on all kinds of tricks, trips and falls short in performance type remedies.

Birds eventually after many observations determine a decal to be a dead statue of their predator.

In our area laws were passed that essentially mandate any new construction take measures to protect migratory birds.

Took a bit but found an interview with the main guy behind FLAPs efforts
