I did one today (2012 but same thing) no need to tape the felt. Just carefully slide the film behind the seal. Just make sure that the film goes past the seal and it will look clean.

I've never had any issues with these.

The only time I haven't taped the felt seals is when the tape never sticks or I ran out of tape  :blink

But the times I've had to deal with that, as mentioned I would carefully slide it past the seal, as for squeegeeing out I felt the only time you get loose felt under the film is when you squeegee all the way to the edge and sometimes the water feeds back under the film which carries whatever debris is there. I usually just squeegee all the water till about an inch or two from the side rail and take my clear slammer wrapped in one of them handy blue towels and slowly press out the water going down towards the panel and it makes for a sure lock in the film that nothing gets sucked back in.

I used to work for a vw dealer from 2011- to a couple months ago. Lots of experience with these cars and got panel removal down to under 2 min. The back speaker tray comes out in 3 min. Then install is soooooo much easier and really clean. I do these cars in hour and 10 min. I have it down to a science.
