Is it legal to tint over the 3rd brake light in California?

Does this need to be cut around, or can it be tinted over? With 5%?

Didn't you have the volvo wagon? If so I think a lot have the brake light separate from the main part of the glass and no real need to tint over

its not legal ever to tint over the brake light. Its a DOT law nationwide. Its not inforced. Just like tail light covers and transparent tail light wraps. You can cover any safty signal device on a vehicle.

For the sake of this discussion, let's presume your car has the high end of the federal standard of 300 candelas worth of illumination, you get 5% transmission from the film install and it now ='s you do the math.

what is the illegal limit of candelas.as in to bright?

and lets say your over that legal limit by 35 candelas,would a 35% VLT smoke auto film bring it within the legal candelas worth of illumination ?
