Is it legal to tint over the 3rd brake light in California?

its not legal ever to tint over the brake light. Its a DOT law nationwide. Its not inforced. Just like tail light covers and transparent tail light wraps. You can cover any safty signal device on a vehicle.

:beer BUT, it CAN get you pulled for probable cause...

In North America, the acceptable range for a single-bulb brake lamp is 80 to 300 candelas. Fed level.

For the sake of this discussion, let's presume your car has the high end of the federal standard of 300 candelas worth of illumination, you get 5% transmission from the film install and it now ='s you do the math.

Is a cop going to stop you for a federal standard, probably not. But, think about your fellow driver(s) and not you or your car.

what is the illegal limit of candelas.as in to bright?

and lets say your over that legal limit by 35 candelas,would a 35% VLT smoke auto film bring it within the legal candelas worth of illumination :spit ?
