CX/GX Guide Bearing Adjustment

Thought this may be helpful to the Roland plotter owners. I am currently building a "In field Maintenance" manual for our reps and indy tint shops with our equipment. Here is the guide bearing adjustment directions. This resolves issues in regards to poor blade calibration. If your guide bearing is fatigued from use or you have suffered a number of "film jams", your carriage can become loose. As a result you will have inconsistant cuts and in most cases not be able to correctly calibrate your blade settings. This specific part is close to $100 from Roland. From my experience you can adjust this part 2-3 times before you need to replace. End result, you have saved $200-$300 dollars!! Hope this helps.

1. Guide Bearing Maintenance

Due to normal wear and film jams, the guide bearing can become fatigued and loose. This will cause poor and or inconsistent cuts. Once this becomes loose it is very difficult to dial in your plotter to cut properly and consistent.

Checking the Guide Bearing

o Lightly grasp the carriage with your index finger and thumb.

o With any light force and the carriage moves or has a “springy” feel, the guide bearing needs adjustment or possible replacement.

Removing Guide Bearing

(Not recommended for inexperienced users)

See pictures below

o Remove rail cover

o Remove cable support

o Remove carriage board assy.

o Remove carriage cover

o Remove carriage board stay

At this point the carriage will separate and the brass guide bearing is able to be removed.

Adjusting the Guide Bearing

o Identify the two factory bends on the bearing

o Adjust the bearing by increasing the existing bend on each side of the bearing.

o The best way to accomplish this is to use two pairs of small needle nose pliers. Place one on each side of the existing crease and slightly increase the bend.

o Since the base of the bearing is pressed flat when installed, it’s important that the adjustment is done only to the existing creases.

o If the bearing has been adjusted previously, this may not resolve your issue and will call for a new replacement from Roland.

Once your adjustment has been made you can reassembly the carriage. Keep in mind during this process to be careful not to reverse the bend you just added to the bearing. This is mainly only an issue during the install of the bearing with the carriage and the carriage stay board.

Reassembly of Guide Bearing

Feed screws through stay board and guide bearing, then line up with carriage and carefully thread screws in. Alternate between the two until snug.
