Hey everybody. I hope this post is allowed here. My name is Vinny and I'm just getting in to tinting. I own a high end Detailing business in CT and also install 12v accessories. I'm trying to expand my services and I figure tinting is a good place to start. I've been in contact with some of the well known names in the industry including Stan Foster who recommended this forum to me. If anyone has any advice to a beginner please feel free to share. Im currently watching videos from Ralph Van Pelt and Platinum Tinting. They seem to explain everything well enough that I've been able to do my personal vehicles and some family vehicles however I've wasted some film in the process, still get an occasional crease and am nowhere close to operating on a level of where I can take on customers. I know it's going to take a lot more practice to sharpen my skills but I'm hoping with enough dedication and guidance I'll eventually get it right.

VTD glad to see you here on tintdude :beer join in conversation and fun with raffles, pictures, tips and tricks then best of all the search button in the upper right corner of the page! It contains thousands of post on any tint subject you can think of. FCat said it with practice and practice then practice. What I do is teach you the right way to practice which greatly reduces STRESS!!

You seem to be on the right track, and talking to the right people.  One piece of advice I can give, is that watching videos is great and you can get a lot of help,  but there is something to be said for "hands-on".  If you can find an experienced tinter that will let you shadow them, or let you pay them for some hands-on training, I think this would greatly improve your chances of success.   Just my :twocents 

 

As said above,  Practice-Practice.  But above all,  keep your standards high.  Do quality work, use good film, and stand behind what you do.

      Stratos 70 on windshield, what is this?

      Captain Obvious has two cents err senses to share: 1) The film should be removed and replaced, because it appears to have adhesive blemishes that shouldn't be there, and 2) The film should be reviewed/inspected once taken from the roll to avoid losing time and resources due to manufacturing issues. Little pieces not so much, but back glass and windscreen pieces ... definitely.

      I switched so long ago... first to KDS but they went away. NT are great though. I use a piece of white strapping material as a cutting buffer between the blade and glass. Some use a button but I didn't like the feel..

      Headlight Taillight Vinyl question... (Looking for CHROME)

      I'm looking for a chrome/mirror wrap for headlights/taillights. No NEOchrome, just a mirror or chrome appearance. Looking to spice up a project. Looking for transparent so can see lights thru film. I have looked and can't find what fits the bill. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

      Stratos 70 on windshield, what is this?

      I can't win with getting tint decent on the windshield. I had 3M on my F150 done twice and still has major defects. Recently did Stratos twice on my F350 and I see this granular spotted, texture pattern on the tint. It's super obvious in the corner here but also right in my view when driving. It's honestly hard to point out and show someone but when your driving and stuff is moving behind the windshield, it becomes more obvious. The lighting also matters. The first time I did the windshield, I had a two foot line on the windshield. Thinking it was tint, they removed the tint and it was apparently a defect in the Ford windshield. An issue between the laminated glass layers caused this big defect. So they removed the tint, I had Ford replace the windshield on a 2024 F350 but when the tint shop removed the tint, they made a bunch of micro scratches in the front windshield, probably from scrapping the glue off. I told them but I didn't care since Ford was replacing the windshield anyways. So if basically I'm trying to figure out what this texture stuff is and if I should have them replace or remove it. Replacing it might just have different issues but also afraid they will scratch the windshield.

      Need some help

      Never overlook the condition of the floor. Back when I did install, I used to mist the floor between the vehicle and the peel board. This is done between misting the window and walking toward the peel board to mist the pattern liner, peel liner and spray adhesive for install. Tacks any dust for the duration of each pattern install, so repeat each time a pattern is going to be installed.
