CaliTINT reacted to DynamicATL in Pricing for headaches
We keep the same price for 99% of vehicles because I don't want to be seen as we gouging for certain vehicles.  Some customers will call and don't want to say the car because they think as soon as they say BMW/etc the price is going higher.  The only vehicles we charge more on are requiring atleast 30 minutes more work.  A few of them are the C4/5/6 Corvettes, 15+ VW GTI, Toyota Prius, BMW i3, Acura Integra Hatchbacks, 16+ Honda Civic Hatchbacks, along with anything requiring a door panel removal.  We also will charge more for any vehicle that is made in the 80's or older.  I look at it as yeah we lose a little time on this one, but we also gain it on others.  I will charge full pop for small vehicles like the Mazda Miata or Mini Cooper plus we have one set price for Trucks/SUV so even if it is a single cab, they pay the same as a quad cab.

Don't get 3M especially to start out, look at SolarFX, Global or Express, i'm a fan of Garware manufactured products. Don't try start a shop right after tint school, you may have went to school but you've just started learning. If you can't work for other people i'd do it as a side thing until you got it down because you won't have it down just because of tint school. Also, follow the advice from @DynamicATL a few posts back, it's solid.

I think you are getting way ahead of yourself...learn how to tint first getting atleast a few years under your belt.  Taking a training class is only going to show you the basics on very easy vehicles, you will still be a complete novice not knowing what to do on a lot of vehicles.  Being able to advertise your "Certified" isn't going to mean anything if you're producing trash work.  There are tons of shops that throw the "Certified" word around and they have had zero formal training...it is just a empty gimmick.  I can name atleast 5 tinters/shops in GA that claim to be certified with 10/20 years experience when their work shows maybe 6 months experience.  Hell next week we are having to tint a C6 Corvette rear window because Tint World can't get it done after 3 attempts.  Basically if your skills can't back up that certification, then it is 100% worthless.

As for 3M, you will need to check with the distributor offering the training as they might require you to be a dealer...I am honestly not sure.  If they do require it, I highly doubt 3M would sign you on as a dealer without an already established shop.  It is also going to be the worst film to train on since it is more difficult and more expensive.  There are plenty of dealers that have been tinting for years that still can't install 3M's higher performing films.  Also when trying different films, different techniques/tools are needed.  So if you get "Certified" on one, you might have to completely switch it up on another brand.

This one I outright refused to tint. It smelled like garbage can. 2001 Chevy Cavalier coup too. Hard pass.

I just looked this vehicle up. On ones like these I loosen up the seals using older installation tools before hand. Just shove them all around the seal to loosen them up. Also to prevent those white pinholes which are probably specks of dirt you need to really clean up in the seals. Personally, if it is really dirty I will spray foam glass cleaner in the seal and using an old tool and thin microfiber rag and jam it up there. I may follow up with a blue paper towel (one that doesn't tear) and jam it all the way around for a last cleaning pass. Then squeegee a few times. When installing on these types of windows I don't spray my solution up into the seals because this will cause any residual dirt to drip down. I might do a light spray on the window and then spray lots of solution on the tint while I'm holding it in my hand. Hope that all makes sense.

Also as far as being able to reach into that tight of a corner, you are going to have to get more tools to deal with all situations. The contour is a great tool but doesn't fit every where. I would probably use the EZ reach (Gold, Platinum, etc.) or a bondo card cut into a similar shape as the EZ reach.

are you guys familiar with 2006 accord sedan rear pass door small windows?  I had issues today...I didnt know how to tuck into such tight sprace, so othter tinters suggested to cut as far as I can to that window and tuck a bit. The thing is, I also cant reach up into the very narrow part of that rear tiny door window. My contour card wont do it so I have bubbles. Also what is the cause of small white pinholes in the tint after being applied? is that a case of not cleaning all the dust off?

You really just have to get your feet wet. As a (learning) tinter, you are going to come across lots of vehicles that take a different approach to it. You need to be resourceful, think outside the box, analyze and execute certain techniques. Also with cars you aren't sure of, just simply look it up on this forum and/or on youtube. Usually someone has discussed it or made a video on it.

Hell I was working on a car today that I have done plenty of (but not enough of them lately). I kinda forgot my procedure on it and ended up redoing the back window 3 times before getting it right. In the end, I just analyzed the glass, etc. and came up with a solution. Also checked up on the forums for tips and its done.
