The high cost of training may be the "line in the sand". I agree if your just getting into PPF today that training is priceless. plus you will be getting lots of on the job that may have a price tag. The learning curve will be smooth since Auto Tint installers have more wet film application methods that favor PPF. Never to late to offer your existing customers add on services,

We are building steam with our tint shop so I think winter wise we should be ok. But it would be great to start another revenue stream and build that up during the winter so when spring summer comes we can hopefully increase our profits while offering more to our customers.

We get a lot of asks about PPF so it sucks to say NO we don't offer that to a customer. Plus the cost of training was a bit more than we thought it would be.

Yeah you don't need to use J&J but A Lot of people do. I use it and love it but it's personal preference for what everyone uses. Try them all to find what works for you. I use what I call "super soap" when installing which is a 6 count of J&J in a standard spray bottle. That's some slide right there. When I bottom load I soak the hell out the bottom portion of the glass to make sure i get a smooth slide.

Even back in the early 80's, Window Tinting was the hottest aftermarket item, that was on the sales ticket at a full blown Car Phone/12volt install center here in NY. Talk about an additional service. No one drove out of that shop without some LLumar AT. Those days Auto Tint was gaining popularity as an add on service. I see PPF as todays must have additional service but without the Big Bang. The install learning curve is too deep, this is what keeps shop owners nervous. Jeff makes a valid point in the last post, but without the quality install the margins will not happen. Go to any upscale car show and the bad installs out number the great ones, ask what the owner paid.

The days of $2.5k full fronts are hardly over.  They are only beginning.  The busiest ppf shops in most markets are the highest price ones.

With a quality product, install, and customer experience in tint or ppf, you can make solid margins.  It just takes a long term commitment to solid work to build that demand and value (not unlike what the snippet from Lorenzotint said).

We'd be happy to help you get set up on a ppf program, but if your tint business is not where you want it there's a way to fix it!

PPF is generally more profitable than tint, but it is a more difficult product to learn and takes a longer time to get off the ground (most consumers don't even know it exists).

PPF is a good add on to a tint business, but if you're struggling in keeping the shop full with your tint business, chances are that you'll have just as hard of a time with PPF.

make sure that youve thoroughly analyzed the reasons that tint is not busier for you in the winter and that there isn't something that you can do to fix the root cause.

    Hi,
We are getting into PPF in September and was wondering if it is worth adding to our existing tint business.

What I mean is, can it potentially take over for tint and be more or just as profitable?

I really hope it is because the winter months are coming  fast here in northern Cali and we are hoping to offset the loss of tint customers with PPF customers.

Also is there anything else anyone recommends to add to a tint shop that can help create another revenue stream? We are really trying to stay automotive so no FG on the horizon...yet

Just stressing about the coming winter lol.

Oh man did one a few weeks ago and was the longest a car took in years.  Pulled panels to make i easy and the fn sweeps were riveted in!! Next one i will charge $100+ extra and drill those lil bastards out!

As far as the new fusion ive havnt had much trouble.  It sucks tucking the rears a little, but with sweeps out its much easier.  The bg does require some shrinking and the install can be a pain with it being so big. To avoid getting rear deck fabric at bottom edge i reverse roll
it and before i squeegee i make a pass with my stroke dr along the bottom edge to pull the deck down, pulling any strands of fabric away.

As far as front 1/4s... newer civics are the hardest imo.

Ah fusion I had focus on the brain. That deck is a little different. It has clips that run down from the side pillars that unless they comes out it will not. I usually manage to slide it forward slightly. As far as the sides snatch the sweeps out and easy money. F**k hand cutting those little quarters

So I am not as seasoned as a lot you on here but there is one car in particular that just makes me cringe when I hear it's name spoken. Ford Fusion.
I actually had one to practice on for a few weeks when I was just starting out. I hated every single day that it was in my bay. I don't know why I struggle with it soooo much. I hate the Back Glass and that stupid carpeting that goes right up to the dot matrix. I hate the rear roll ups that you have to bomb drop. and I hate the front quarters that are tight as hell. sorry for the rant. Rough day with my non favorite car.

Anyone else have a car that just makes you cringe when you hear it's name?
