Yeah bro I'm frugal. Not no cheapo but I don't like to waste. I even recycle some of the towels and use them to clean other stuff like the shop bathroom, toilet, etc. hahahaha

CaliTINT got a reaction from bpbv6-6 in new to tinting, how to work on difficult vehicles?
You really just have to get your feet wet. As a (learning) tinter, you are going to come across lots of vehicles that take a different approach to it. You need to be resourceful, think outside the box, analyze and execute certain techniques. Also with cars you aren't sure of, just simply look it up on this forum and/or on youtube. Usually someone has discussed it or made a video on it.
Hell I was working on a car today that I have done plenty of (but not enough of them lately). I kinda forgot my procedure on it and ended up redoing the back window 3 times before getting it right. In the end, I just analyzed the glass, etc. and came up with a solution. Also checked up on the forums for tips and its done.

Both (if that makes sense). I use one used blue towel for cleaning out seals etc. And one new towel (for wiping down squeegee, etc.). I think the problem before was I was using the newer (cleaner) towel on more than a few cars and the fibers started to come out. I still use the grungy towels on several cars for seals and get a new one for 1-2 cars for other stuff. Hope that made sense lol

You may want to do a few freebies for practice at your own expense, your questions don't sound like you'll do a high quality job but it's good that's what you're working towards. As far as afraid of new customers, this means you should be an employee and not a business owner until you are comfortable.
Watch youtube videos until you get that training. Search on youtube for users like Tintstuff, Rob Forbes, Rodney McClure, Window Tinting Business, Becomeawindowtinter.com, and my favorite because he's a good example of fast and furious tint without the bs Window Tint Warriors.
I've never taken a back window off, please elaborate on that.

I use about 3-4 towels a car. 240 towels a box at $30+ equals $2 a car. All the semi used towels get thrown in a box. Those towels have a couple uses after that. Firstly I’ll use them to clean the rubber side seals with alcohol to reduce contamination coming in from the sides. My second use for them is during felt installs. I use the red scotch pads with alcohol to prep the sweeps and the old towels to wipe them clean prior to felting them. Sometimes you’ll get drip marks on door panels and I’ll use those old towels with some meguiars interior detailer.

CaliTINT got a reaction from quality tintz in Calculating final tint after tinting over factory tint
Whenever I put 30% over factory there is not a huge difference so I always recommend they put 20% to achieve a darker (but not super dark) look.

CaliTINT got a reaction from quality tintz in Fusion hybrid, blue max, or orange crush???
I started with Blue Max, used Orange Crush for a bit then went back to Blue Max. I recently ordered the Go Doctor (blue) and I like it the best. Very ergonomic, less fatigue, super light weight. Only thing is the blue feels a little more stickier to the tint but I think over time it starts to slip better. I also think it expels more water easily and I also started using it as my cleaning squeegee prior to laying down the film.

CaliTINT got a reaction from quality tintz in Towels
WARNING:
Just a heads up on my experience with these towels. We switched to these a while back from the regular blue shop towels because I read that these were better. They work very well (don't tear apart and last long). However, I wouldn't use them too long (for installation at least). I do just like one of the previous commenters said and toss them in a box for later use (cleaning other things, etc.) I was reusing them for too long and you can see the big strings of lint on them. Well they kept ending up in my tint jobs and the lint was sooooo big that it couldn't be pressed out and I had to redo several (perfect) windows because of it. I finally realized it was the towels (and my technique) I now only use them for about 1-2 cars then they go in the box or they are used only for cleaning seals etc. I was mainly using these to wipe my squeegee down while cleaning the windows prior to installation which is why I'm sure they ended up in my tint.

CaliTINT reacted to pbalentine in Most annoying customers
This guy asked some of the most annoying things. Where does the water go after you put it on? Could you keep the ignition off..it’ll kill the battery. Oh and at the end when i was done, That took a while, did you have trouble? Last one i looked at him like i wanted to punch him and he said its been a while since he got tint. Probably just get a shop next year before i beat someone!

CaliTINT reacted to jh812 in To launch or not to launch business? Help please!
I can only speak from my experience, which my story is pretty similar to yours. I did however tint full-time out of my home garage for three years, prior to I did three years part time out of home. I've just recently moved into a shop and have had great success with it so far. I can definitely tell an increase in business, and I wouldn't change what I have now for anything. That being said everybody's situation is different, so kind of depends on the whole Spectrum. You have to factor in a lot of things besides just your rent. There comes a lot of expenses with getting a shop opened up that you don't even realize beforehand. It's a lot of hard work and if you think you'll just work 9 to 5 you'll be sadly mistaken. It's a constant struggle to balance everything between paying bills, tinting windows, and of course the main thing getting customers in the door. That being said if there are no other legit shops in town I don't think it would be a bad idea. And oddly enough as I was typing all this out I had a call from a local service center right down the road from my new shop that they saw my sign and now I'm giving them a quote haha.
