I use my own film or nothing.  I am the one installing it, I'm the one with my name on it...no way would I use a different film.

I remove the quarters from the vehicle when there is only a rubber gasket.  A bit more work but they are so much easier to deal with.

I have had the same experience...17 years of tinting and I haven't once had to send in a claim.  Unless it was a large job (flatglass for example) I don't think it's worth the hassle.

Actually got to work on my personal vehicle for once.  5% over the back, 20% on the fronts, 70% on the windshield and 35% on the pano roof.  Also tinted my rear taillights, third brake light as well as the front side headlight markers.

Darkimag22 got a reaction from Dano in Is it mandatory to shift film when cutting?
It is probably easier to go on youtube and watch some videos but I'll try to explain as best as I can.  In a nutshell you want to cut one side of the rolldown, shift the film over by 6-8mm on the same side you just cut, cut the other edge and then shift it back to "center" it (same amount of overlap on both vertical edges), roll the window down and then do your final cut along the top edge.  As long as there is no light gaps you are good to go.

That looks like contamination to me. Rust? Nope, never seen glass rust. I have seen welding slag cause a similar appearance. It's where someone welded or grinded something next to the glass and some of the hot sparks will stick to the glass and causes little lumps and pitting that look very similar to heavy contamination.

I don't think that's the case here though. Without being able to see it in person, I can't say for sure.

All of the above are possible. I'll add that the copper in the lines can corrode on the surface. I usually use a bit of #3 steel wool on older cars to knock it back. Those lines might come off if you try to remove the film. Steaming it off might help, no guarantees.

Hell....Stevie Wonder could have done a better install.  The owner must have a huge set of balls to have the arrogance to not only half-ass threaten you, but to say there's nothing wrong (I assume you sent him pictures...lots of them I hope).  This seems to be a reoccurring theme in this day and age...it's always someone else's fault/pass the blame/excuse after excuse.  It's guys like that that are ruining the tint business for everyone else.  It does mean more work for the legit businesses at times but seeing pics like this make my blood boil.

I wish the OP nothing but good luck.  I hope this doesn't cost you any more out of pocket expenses. Fingers crossed.

That they throw their tools away and never try to tint another car...ever.

That's a tough call. Def do not let them touch it again.

And it's unusual to pay for the film and installation separately unless you bought your own film, and that's never a good idea. Find a reputable shop and let them instal their film.

That huge scratch in pic #6 probably wasn't them. Everything else tho is pretty much FUBAR. All that rubber trim is jacked up and is not repairable as far as I know.

@JohnGalt I see from your other posts that you are looking for more film. I'm assuming it's for the redo on the bad tint job you got previously. I'd suggest not buying your own film and paying someone to install it. That invites several issues.

Just find a good shop and let them use their film. They will be able to do a better job because they are used to handing that film and they will be able to warranty the work. If they mess up a piece of their own film, they can just cut another, but if they are using your film, then there is no margin for error.

To be honest, that's a very weak excuse.  Both windows must have accidentally "shifted" during install...really?!  Either way it's great to see you had them redo it.

Not great but it could happen. What is great is that the shop is making it right and not damaging the the industry by ignoring the raised issue. Any good installer that has the opportunity to hire help because of a good reputation has had to deal with the pain of oversight.

With some of the responses I see in this thread I get a feeling youre not very good tinters to begin with.

Correct, its a BMW but not a used one. Even if it were used what would be the difference?  You guys are the same clows that suck the c0ck of every lambo owner that comes running into your shop.

Im glad you wouldnt want to tint my car... I wouldnt let you within ten feet near it.  No where in my post did I state that I wanted to pay a certain price.  Ill pay top dollar for top quality work.. I just like quality control.  Im not going to spend money on a crappy tint job with air or dust bubbles all over my tint.

Typical "I wanna make $2500 a day cash but offer you shotty work" attitude.

Keep up the great work ethic.. when your mom kicks you out of her garage or the landlord evicts you for non payment , you can always turn to Uber eats for a job!

edi: someone above mentioned making BMW owners prepaying for tint.  Why would someone pay upfront for a tint job just so you can do whatever botched job since you got paid already? Let’s get serious bro!

To be 100% honest...I'm not sure if there is such thing as a "perfect" install.  Just think about it for a couple seconds...we are installing a wet, sticky sticker.  There is dust hiding everywhere...in the seats, in the headliner, in the air.  Good luck.  I sure as hell feel bad for the shop you choose to do business with, though.

I've used both and to be 100% honest I prefer the "by hand" method.  Unless it's a back glass of a car, I can cut a door glass by hand quicker (and more accurately) then it takes to load the film into the cutter, find your vehicle, cut it, weed it, etc.  I also do not put a knife onto the glass EVER.  A wax pencil is a tinters best friend.

To the OP...there's nothing worse than taking your pride and joy to a business and having something like this happen.  I feel for you....and hope that they make it right.
