Happened to me at work twice now, thought I should give the warning. First time I thought it was a fluke, second time I noticed a pattern. 
 
When you squeeze out the back window, the water will run PERFECTLY down the drivers side, down the inner quarter and funnel over a wiring harness that's part of the blindspot monitoring system, triggering a fault on the dash and saying see the dealer. Thankfully I work for a Honda dealership, so no biggie. 
 
If in the event this happens to you- pop the trunk, pull back the trunk liner on the left hand side by removing the cargo hook tucked in the corner (pressure clipped in) and peel it back. The harness is right there when you pull it back, you can't miss it. Unplug both harnesses and take compressed air and blow all the water out and you're back in business. Won't throw a hard code, no need to go to the dealer if it happens. 
 
Figured I'd save everyone the panic attack.

Not knocking the whole thing just think the hype is higher than the truth.

I’ve always fought those by adding extra slip down there. Now I use a soakshield and it pushes it out of the way.

You did not say what material you are using. Use something 48" wide and rock on.
 
Mark your horizontal  "cheat" lines by either opposite surface level marks using water soluble markers or same surface vertical 3 or 4" strips of masking tape spaced about every 2 or 3 feet apart and cut level at your desired height.
 
Then just butt up your factory edge to either marking system and trim at seams.
 
Be sure film is "cooked" enough to drag your knife at the bevel edge without lifting . Just like "shaving " a top edge in a vehicle only easier.

Here are a few examples of office privacy film installation.  We mark the opposite side with a dry erase marker and put a level line on it. Pulled the strips on a film handler.  The bottom right install was the easiest because I used 36" film.  If you can't remove the handles you only need to split the film right at the handle and seam it.

Could you just run a strip of masking tape across where you need to align the top and then install each panel to that? That way you can ensure you're straight and aligned but install one panel at a time for easier film handling. 

When I have a helper I generally pull the vehicle in they soap up the back glass I cut it and start shrinking. As I'm doing that they pull seals and prep sides. I'll cut the passenger side and start installing those. Once I'm done with that back glass gets hung they prep and I install. Then work my way on to the driver's side. They install seals or panel on other side and begin touch up.

Do what Tom said. Specifically, have your film supplier slit the rolls down to the exact band widths you need. In your case 30" & 9 1/2". I'd also have them slit some material that can be used as a spacer for the clear gaps (1/2", 1", 5 1/2". etc.) Level and install the middle band all the way across and then use the spacers(reusable) to set the top and bottom bands.
 
We custom slit for customers all he time. We have free spacer material that can be used as well.

I’ve used a blue max for years but just ordered an orange crush and clear crush to try out.

Man that sucks. I haven’t had this problem but hopefully it’ll dry out tonight and be good in the morning.

I’m ashamed to admit it, but I’ve done this on a truck that I tinted the night before. Irate would be an understatement
